The Americans S1E4 In Control OAD 2/20/13

Very cool episode. Loved seeing the Reagan shooting from the perspectives of all the different parties who knew nothing at the time. We have known for so long that Hinkley was just obsessed with Jodie Foster that we forget that the U.S. thought he might have been a Russian agent.

The whole Al Haig claiming he was in charge has always been a joke and he has always seemed like a buffoon for saying it, so I never considered the Russians might have seriously thought a coup was happening in the U.S. That was very interesting!

I always wonder what Jodie Foster feels about the shooting.

It's so good to live in a country where the idea of a coup is just ridiculous no matter what happens. Hope it stays that way....

Haig was just saying that he was the highest ranking official physically located in the White House, and I remember everyone joking about taking it wrong.

What gets me, besides them calmly snuffing a rent-a-cop on the Sec Def's doorstep, is what risk they take by doing stuff like borrowing a Government car (they could have just stolen some license plates!) If they get hit by your average maniac DC driver they'd well and be busted when the cops show up.

I think I missed so nuance with the traitor KGB secretary and our FBI hero. He spotted the tail before his partner could (or ever) warned him? What made them think they could meet in his car out back? Was the tail gone?

I thought this was an excellent episode! I guess because I'm old enough to remember the day Reagan was shot and that's all everyone was talking about after school that day.

I enjoyed the soundtrack so much in the pilot episode and maybe I'm just not paying attention, but have they quit playing 80s music?

I think what happened is that his partner spotted the tail but wasn't sure if it was a tail so did not radio him. He spotted the tail himself and brushed by her instead of initiating contact. So later his partner was explaining why he didn't radio in to warn about the tail.

I don't understand. It is all stuff that happened in real life. If you said a show like The Following or Dexter was too dark I would understand that.

Yes, the following is very dark as well. I grimace often. The wife likes Kevin Bacon.

The only thing about this show that frustrates me. My nostalgic brain had come to associate an 80's soundtrack with John Hughes films and happy endings, I enjoyed being jolted out of that with the first episode. The soundtrack hasn't featured prominently since the first episode, but so many people responded to it I'm hoping they'll take that into consideration for the second season.

Mrs. S. and I were talking about the "where were you when?" aspect of the Reagan shooting. I can't remember for the life of me . I was a senior in college at the time, so that may have something to do with it.

Yes. If the pilot was Ep 1, then this was #4.

There was no thread on it here, but "Gregory" was a fantastic episode. This is probably the best show on TV right now.

You made me remember.

I was at a trade conference at Caesar's Place in Vegas.

Day 1: Announcement. The President has been shot.
Day 2: Announcement. The hotel is on fire. (This was weeks after the devastating MGM Grand fire.)

I had a now-very-crude video camera and shot video of the fire. Amateur video was non-existent in those days.

Met up with the local CBS news crew and watched them edit the story. The footage ended up on CNN. I never got paid.

HEY! THAT MEANS that Phillip could have a video recorder if he was a early adopter!

that is what I thought too.

Am I wrong too? Since people stopped making threads for this series, I've given up discussing it.

I love the way this series is bringing back memories for me. I was only 8 or so when this took place. I remember the Reagan shooting. I didn't understand why it meant anything. I remember my mom crying when my dad, in full uniform, with his duffel bag, kissed her and us goodbye. And saying to my mom, "why are you crying?"

At the time, dad was the head of the hospital at an air wing.

I love the music! I hope that keeps up. (can the show afford the royalty payments?)

Well, this isn't a situation like WKRP, where they didn't take DVD royalties into consideration (because they didn't exist), and they are stuck with episodes that had specific music. Here, they can always pick another song if the one they wanted was too expensive, and we'd never know the difference.

I was in kindergarten. I remember feeling scared but also a little excited to be experiencing real history, like when Lincoln was assassinated. For the life of me, I can't figure out how kindergarten-me already knew that Lincoln had been assassinated.

(The other big world events I remember from my year in kindergarten were the first launch of Columbia and the presidential election.)

I was in college when Reagan was shot. At the time, it struck me more as a failed assasination attempt than a life threatening wound to the President. There was way more discussion about Haig's "I'm in charge" comment than about any geopolitical fallout.

These two sure do a lot of risky spycraft to be deep sleeper agents. Of course, it would be the most boring show in the world if they acted appropriately.

The Russian secretary is very pretty.

The wife is one stone cold woman, the way she calmly killed the guard.

I like this show but it seems like I haven't subconsciously committed to it since I can't remember anybody's name a day after watching the last episode.

Also great to see Margo Martindale as Claudia. She was terrific as Justified's Mags Bennett.

I agree, and that plays right to me. A person who had been through the rigorous training they had would definitely be able to make a cold split second decision like that.

Funny. I had that "IT'S REALLY HAPPENING thing run through my head when I heard "A meteorite has hit Russia," but less so with "Osama Bin Laden is dead" or "Man on the moon!" but a bit more with "A twin engine plane has hit the World Trade Center."

I was in college, and I remember not being scared at all. I was a bit torn I guess not being a Reagan fan. But I know that the system works and that if the President dies, the the Veep takes over. I figured as a nation we had it covered. It never occurred to me, not once, that this was a Russian plot or anything like that. John Lennon had been shot not to long before and to me, this was just another nut case like Marc David Chapman.

Didn't the Jodie Foster angle come up right away? As in, on the first day?

The cops might have known, but it took a few days to hit the press.

We can guess that there were a lot of healthcare workers that were familiar with Hinckley.

No blogs or twitter in those days.
