The Following - The Poets Fire - 2/4/13

Not that great IMO. Maybe each week there will be a "surprise" follower, like Maggie this week, but I guess it wasn't really a surprise. Very little Natalie Zea I'll keep "following" the show to see where it goes but I'm starting to lose interest already.

This week certainly wasn't as strong as the first two episodes but I did enjoy it. I like the conflict between the three followers who have the boy. I still think Joe's wife is a follower and she knows her son is completely safe.

I didn't buy that they would send one single officer to the house with the wife when Carroll's wife and Maggie Grace both got a whole team of police to protect her.

I like the show but it's quickly, if not already, turned in the 24 "perimeter" parody.

I liked it.

I was surprised at the the only passing mention of the Poe book passed into Joe Carroll's prison cell. I did notice agent Riley's ears perked when Joe said thanks to the new FBI lady (I don't think she's one of them). But, I guess that will not go anywhere as he did not survive the episode!

I hope they expand upon the motivation of the wannabe serial killers to do Joe Caroll's bidding?

Who do you think send the text to the wife? Was it the husband?

This episode made me believe that Emma is really the ring leader. She seems to be in control of everything and it seems to me like she just started this years ago by telling Carrol her ideas. Almost like she is running it and he is just along for the ride.

I absolutely think that. That's why he showed up 15 seconds later.

Is there another possible scenario?

It was the not really gay guy who maybe really is gay. The girl said to him "did you send the email yet?"

I was very disturbed by them teaching the innocent little boy to kill animals.

Oh sorry, you said text. I thought you meant who sent the email video to to Carroll's wife.

Well it did seem suspicious that the text came seconds after female FBI agent found out that the wife was a follower.

I'm still liking it somewhat, but I do find myself losing interest at various points of the show. I think they need to tighten up the plotline a bit. Not sure I'm going to stick with it.

Beat me to it. I speculated at the start that there would be a series of "surprise" followers week after week. I'm a guy who likes action movies but this show seems to revel in the gore and death scenes. It loses shock value but leaves me feeling like a sicko for watching.

Also agree that its already achieved 24 "perimeter" parody status.

My hunch tells me the opposite, but my hunch is about 51% right.

Interesting twist and I like it. Except they did make her out to be very innocent and naive when she first met Joe. Hard to think that she manipulated him, but it's certainly possible.

So there's a big group of people who watch some performance actor do his thing, then go light a guy on fire.

Would you just let him leave?

I've got to think in some groups of people someone would tackle the guy, and then would quickly get help subduing him.

Perhaps not.

I had the same thought while watching. I would HOPE that if I saw a guy douse another with gas and then light it that I would make sure and try and subdue him....then again I might try to help the burning guy first.

Could he have had a bomb, or more flammable material? That would stop most people. I would call the police, but i would not be trying to subdue a psycho. They could do anything, pull out a gun, knife, bomb etc. They already set a person on fire. I wouldn't take a bet on my life trying to subdue a person like that.

I am still enjoying but I think this episode was slowed down by all the flashbacks.

I predicted the wife was in on it from the beginning so if they are going to do that every week it will have went from a great surprise in the first couple of episodes to completely predictable.

That's what caught my attention even more than not trying to catch the guy. I would hope someone would have the sense to take off their jacket and at least try to help the guy put the fire out.

Along paranoid lines, I fear that this show is giving ideas to the nuts out there.

Or SOMETHING! That whole scene was just bad, in every imagineable way. Plus, if somebody is pouring gasoline on me, I'm thinking that I am smelling gasoline so I cannot imagine that I'm just standing there looking stupid.

Then, he's rolling around trying not to die and nobody would start covering him trying to put the fire out?

But more strange, to me, is just how all those people were standing around like they were.

Maybe all those people standing around watching are also part of the following.

That's the grand revelation in the series finalé. Kevin Bacon is the ONLY GUY ON EARTH who's not part of the Following.

You're joking
I fear that that is the show's actual premise

Only like Ronald Moore in BSG the writers will only realize this as their only out as they're writing the last 2 episodes

It's going to kill the show. Audiences won't have it. If they keep it up, I'm not going to be sorry it dies, either.

Teaching the boy to kill made the series more personal and more menacing. It's a good move if they don't overdo it. Moving onto higher order animals that are commonly considered pets such as dogs would be a mistake and would alienate viewers. I bet they will move onto some other psychological way of conditioning the boy. I also suspect he's not going to remain a prisoner forever. That plot line will get old.

The fire scene happened very quickly, I think folks are being too critical of the bystanders. It's going to take people a few moments to react and figure out what just happened. My first thought would be that it was somehow part of the act. By the time I figured out it was real, the guy would be gone.

That's what I was thinking. People may have thought it was part of a show (at least for a minute).
