"Up all night" Christina Applegate quit

"It’s been a great experience working on Up All Night, but the show has taken a different creative direction and I decided it was best for me to move on to other endeavors. Working with Lorne Michaels has been a dream come true and I am grateful he brought me into his TV family. I will miss the cast, producers and crew, and wish them the best always."

NBC executives still won't give up the ghost, and are looking at other actresses like Lisa Kudrow to step in and play Reagan.

They need to just give it up. A recast is NOT going to help this show.

The season went on hiatus during winter break..

All the changes done to the show.
  1. In the original pilot episode, Applegate and Maya Rudolph's characters were PR specialists. By the time the series made it to air, Rudolph was a talk show host, and Applegate her producer.
  2. Midway through the first season, the talk show got new management, and Applegate had a new boss to deal with.
  3. At the start of the second season, the talk show was canceled, and all the characters who worked on it other than Applegate and Rudolph's were eliminated from the show.
  4. Where the original premise had involved Will Arnett's lawyer choosing to be a stay-at-home dad while Applegate worked, in the new season, Applegate became primary caregiver, and Arnett went back to work — not as a lawyer, but as a contractor, working alongside Applegate's previously-unseen brother.
  5. When none of that worked, NBC put production on hiatus and announced plans to retool it as a traditional multi-cam comedy shot in front of a live studio audience. (current season 2 hiatus)
  6. While that retooling was underway, the show's creator Emily Spivey quit — no doubt in frustration over how little the show now resembled the one she had devised.
  7. Christina Applegate quit

I actually really liked the show in the first season. I love Will Arnett.

I didn't like the changes at the start of this season and I dropped it after a few episodes.

I did the same thing. I planned to watch again if it made it a full season.

I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes, desperately trying to like it, before I quit. Had trouble finding any humor in it.

I liked it well enough when it was about a woman with a new baby who was also working full-time at a professional career. There were some funny moments and I could relate to that. (I am solidly in the demo, also being mom of a 1-year-old with a full-time career.) But honestly there were some serious problems from the beginning -- like the entire Ava/Maya Rudolph character, who was not at all funny. Even in the first season, I was mostly fast-forwarding through her scenes.

What they SHOULD have done was re-tooled it to get rid of Maya Rudolph entirely and focus more on the parts that were good -- more about Chris and Reagan's home life and her struggles balancing the baby with her career. Instead, they went in the opposite direction. There are lots of stay-at-home moms/working father families on TV; there's just nothing interesting about that premise at all. And even after doing that, they kept the Ava character, even though it wasn't necessary since she and Reagan didn't even work together anymore.

This whole season's been a train wreck even before the changing-format stunt and now all the people jumping ship. They should just let it die.

I cannot find a reference to any actual episodes after December 2012. The show was being retooled as a live audience show. Sounds like they had nothing ready to go and apple gate and others took a powder.

The show needed tweaking from the first year but they went the wrong way. More Ava. Adding the brother and Sean Hayes.

I've watched it since the start and was really hoping it would get stronger as the seasons went on. I loved Will Arnett, too. His character kept me coming back every week. I agree with Ruth, though. Had they just focused more on Reagan balancing home life while working full time instead of going in a total opposite direction (focusing a LOT on Ava whom I loathed, adding Reagan's brother, losing the Ava show/Reagan's job) I think it could've had more potential.

To all of what Ruth said. (well, except for me being even remotely in the target demo). Maya Rudolph should never have been on the show. Her assistant was much more entertaining. I watched and enjoyed most of the first season, but quit after the end of season one. Based on the train wreck described above, it sounds like I made a sound decision.

All of this. Maya Rudolph just never had a substantive role outside of being that annoying, constantly intrusive friend. Granted, I can't stand her in most of her work, but this was over the top. Any normal family would've set boundaries long ago.

It's pilot season. Christina knows where this show is headed. It's best to get out ASAP she can land something for next season. This is her third (?) sitcom since Married With Children and they have all failed.

Agreed. There was a little mileage in Reagan being incompetent as a SAHM and Chris knowing the drill, but that should have been a partial season arc, at most.

Rudolph has always been my least favorite thing about the show.

I'm sure her contract had some sort of out clause that she could invoke with all the changes they made to the series. It was no longer the concept she signed on for.

SAHM? Single and hot mom?

The last episode I caught ended with Reagan and Chris sharing a bath in the partially remodeled bathroom, with Maya and her brother walking in on them.

I agree that the show was fun and funny in the first season, but it really lost a lot of its charm after S01, and Maya Rudolph was a huge distraction -- and not in a good way.

I will look forward to whatever Christina Applegate does next, as well as Will Arnett.

Maya Rudolph is a one-trick pony, and that trick isn't even that good.

Because of Will Arnett I decided to give it a try. I managed to watch half of the pilot and ditched it. Good to see I missed nothing.

I'm enjoying all the Maya Rudolph hate. I never even liked her on SNL. I stopped watching this show after the first few episodes for the reasons others have stated.

However, I have two friends that love the show and love Maya Rudolph. Different strokes for different folks. I guess that's why we have several hundred TV channels, plus the internet. One size doesn't fit all anymore. I grew up in NY where we had 7 channels. I know there were some places where they were lucky to have 3 channels. My times have changed.

Maybe this. It's also possible that she just decided that breaking her contract was worth the consequence.

I was never really a Married With Children, nor a Christina Applegate fan, but I fell in love with her in Jesse. It was so long ago that I don't really remember much about the show, but according to Wikipedia, they changed the premise of the show in the second season and even though it was the 12th highest rated show, it was cancelled.

I also liked Samantha Who? but started to lose interest in the second season.

Perhaps Christina just can't sustain a show beyond the first season.

Samantha Who? also changed premises during the show. So with Jesse doing the same thing, and now this show, you do have to wonder.

I don't think any of them were her fault though. She just seems to pick bad scripts to be a part of.

When has "retooling" the show EVER worked? When will NBC just realize that they shouldn't bring crap like that new Dr drama with 2 personalities out and focus on stuff that people want.
