I like the way you think (am guessing TiVo may not, however)!

Just thought I'd throw this in here.

My wife has a S2 box that she got from a Continuing Medical Education company (she's a physician); they would send CME videos to the box every once in a while, but they stopped a couple of years ago and we haven't used the box since then.

I've seen these emails in her mailbox a few times over the past year. They pop up every two or three months; the first two (nine and six months ago) were for $99, the second two (three months ago and this time around) were for $49.

We don't use the box (since we've got a Premiere, an HD, a Toshiba DVD/Tivo, and an S2 that Slings to my iPhone), but at some point I may just put it back in service with an antenna, just for the hell of it.

A s2 won't work with an antenna, since all(*) OTA has gone digital.

(*) for all practical purposes. Theoretically there could still be low power analog stations, but that's not likely.

It will work to control a CECB (except the 2DT and the 542).

Coupon-Eligible Converter Box

Those standalone ATSC tuners that would only output SD, among other limitations, and were eligible for the special coupons distributed during the NTSC shutdown. I assume that the S2 can control some other ATSC tuners as well, but since it's an SD device itself, a CECB is adequate.

It wouldn't HAVE to be "coupon-eligible"...any converter box would do...

Series 2 Tivos will not work with just any OTA converter/tuner STB. Back in the day there were lists of the ones that would work, I have a channel master that was one of the better ones that works fine.

Which is why I said "I assume that the S2 can control some other ATSC tuners as well". (I can only personally vouch for two brands of CECB.)

Although they aren't sold as such anymore, there are orders of magnitude more CECBs in the wild than other types of standalone ATSC tuners.
