The Carrie Diaries - "Pilot" OAD 1/14/2013

OK. Who else is watching? Admit it!! It's OK.

Many of you know I am a sucker for just about any sort of teen/adult drama. And even more so fore period pieces set in the 1980s. Loving the fashion and music here.

I know very little about the Carrie Bradshaw character, apart from knowing she is a character from the popular TV series Sex in the City. I never watched that show.

The actress playing young Carrie is adorably cute.

This might be even more fun not knowing who Carrie grows up to be.

I don't know who she grows up to be, other than being a sex columnist for a newspaper. (or is it a magazine?). I know NOTHING about the type of person Carrie Bradshaw is as an adult in 'Sex in the City'

Right now, I'm more interested to see how young Carrie turns out to be.

Is there any canon from 'Sex in the City' that gives background on Carrie as a high schooler?

No. We knew nothing about Carrie before she came to New York. I'm not even certain we knew where she came from. I also don't recall her parents ever once being mentioned.

We do know that Carrie is based on Candace Bushnell, and that Candace Bushnell is from Glastonbury, CT.

Only reason I know that is that I'm a huge fan of this guy, who took her to her senior prom.

So this is just a bunch of high school kids in the 80's? Anybody else think it's worth watching? I've never watched Sex in the City either.

Good. We won't have to worry about people bitching and moaning about any mistakes and how it differs from the original source. I'll be able to participate in these threads!!

So far, mostly. With a token parent thrown in. But I suspect we'll see a lot more adults in the mix with Carrie being in Manhattan. if you saw the pilot, you'll know what I am talking about.

Is it worth it? I dunno. But I am gonna find out.

I was reading while GF was watching it in bed next to me. I caught some of it - I think it's an interesting idea.

it made me feel very old.

and to have her be 15 - they did say she was 15 right? and doing some of what she is doing in Manhattan seemed kindof off for me...

first experience? shoplifting
second experience? drinking champagne in a club she would never get into.

all that said nice to see a Doctor Who companion cross over.

I might never watch this show but this is the only reason it even appeared on my radar.

I watched, and will give it a shot.

My biggest objection was that they tried to squeeze WAY too much 80's music into one episode - like it was a contest or something. I would have preferred to hear more of a few songs, than brief snippets of every song they could think of! It seems that, for now, they are more interested in capturing the authenticity of the period than developing the characters. I am willing to give it some time to see if that happens...

This. Would a parent really let a 15 year old go into the city alone, and would a 15 year old get an internship? A senior in high school maybe...

But I did like the relationship with her dad. My dad died when I was 15, so I can identify with that part. I'll watch a couple more.

Cool to see teen drama with no cell phones.

She isn't 15. She was 15 two summers ago (the summer before her mom died).

So she is 17, which is old enough for a high school internship.

Ok, thanks. That makes a lot more sense. Still wouldn't let my 17 year old daughter go into NY city alone, but that's just me.

This is fair, even to a guy who loves his 80s music. But it was the pilot, so I guess they wanted to drive home the point.

When they played 'Material Girl', they didn't play the actual Madonna version. I guess getting the rights to that was too much $$$$

At SOME point, Carrie's new city friend is gonna find out she is a high school student. I wonder how she will react. Maybe she won't care and nothing will change.

On further reflection, the teenage girls who are the natural audience for The Carrie Diaries are also very unlikely to have seen SATC either, so I have to admit it's not so strange that you are watching "blind" too.

I hadn't heard of The Carrie Diaries, read this comment, and ran straight to Hulu.

I watched it yesterday. I loved that she chose the city over the boy.

I didn't make it through the episode. Maybe I didn't try hard enough. It is a little more 'high schooly' than what I would probably find interesting. Obviously, it wasn't trying to fool me into thinking it was something else. But I figured I have enough shows to watch and this wouldn't make it into the top 100 for me.

Loved SATC and still kind of miss the characters but I'm not in the targeted audience (age group) for this prequel I suppose.
