S3 TiVo spontaneously reboots and sometimes hangs

A couple days ago, I noticed that my TiVo S3 was frozen with a still image from a show and was not responsive to the remote. Even the time display was frozen. This happened a couple times that day and then the behavior changed. Since then the TiVo has spontaneously rebooted several times and sometimes hangs at the powering up screen. Unplugging/replugging usually allows it to complete start up. Is there anything I can try before replacing the HD?

Check the power supply capacitors. Is this an original S3 OLED or the later HD?

Try running Kickstart 54 & then 57.

Open the Tivo and visually inspect the capacitors on the power supply.
You want them to be completely flat on top.
If any show signs of bulging, that could be the source of your problem.

It's an HD S3. I wasn't aware of Kickstart. I'll try that and then take a look at the capacitors. Thanks, guys!

Eliminate the power supply as a possible source of the problem first, so that you know you're doing the rest of your troubleshooting with a known good power supply involved.

At some point after my last reply, I unplugged the TiVo expecting to come back later and try Kickstart. It ended up staying off overnight and part of the next day. I restarted it and it hasn't rebooted or froze since then. I guess I'll just wait until another failure and then pull it open to check the capacitors.

Better make it sooner than later if you care about your TV shows.

Preventative measure, start copying your shows to PC now before you lose them.

I had a similar* problem. Replacing the hard drive stopped it from happening again.

*not exactly the same, because mine wasn't hanging at the powering up screen.

Here is a photo of a bulging cap, along with a non-bulging one:
