What Criteria is used to Close a Thread

So, what's the criteria that is used to close a thread?

The Tim Tebow hate group discussion was closed the other day. Is that because it was bad mouthing TiVo? What is wrong with people discussing a potential boycott for TiVo because of their support of hate groups?

The forum rules address this question. Regarding the moderator action in the case you mentioned, here are some quotes I believe are applicable from the section dealing with moderators:
Quote:
Moderators may lock a thread because it is has gone as far as it could go, in their opinion, or is heading down a path that would violate the rules or guidelines (based on experience). Rules may be added or changed at any time.

If a moderator closes a thread, do not start another one on the same topic.

If you have a question for a moderator on a decision they have made, you can send a PM and discuss it privately, and the moderators will do the best they can to respond in a timely manner. Do not question moderators in public.
Note in particular the last sentence, which I think you should abide by.

I think the thread in question satisfied both criteria for closing a thread. It had degenerated into a mud-slinging brawl.

I am glad I avoided it. I have no love for Tebow, but the hate; seriously?

Did it prove Godwin's Law?

I think it was because of the decidedly political direction the thread was headed.

Good for the mods, I say. That thread died a well deserved death. Every time I saw it pop up in the list of recently modified threads, I said to myself, "Is that silly thread still going on?"

There were all sorts of things wrong with that thread. Flaming, name calling, religious talk. All of them contributed to why I closed the thread. It had NOTHING to do with TiVo. You can criticize TiVo all you want. While they are a sponsor they do not have any control over content here.

There's a special place over at the DDB forums called the Sewer. It's where threads get placed that follow this type of path. They don't generally get shut down unless they get totally out of hand. The point being, if the thread migrates to the Sewer it sends a message to all those involved.

I have never even looked at the Tebow-Tivo thread because I could tell it wasn't a discussion I wanted to get involved in. Religion and politics or whatever was being discussed has no place in a public forum unless that's what the forum is set up for.

The mods criticize Tivo on here too. It definitely isn't about that.

Not to mention it was a silly-assed thread from the get-go, if you ask me.

Not that, as a moderator, you need any support for your decision from me, but I am compelled to say it was a good decision on your part. At least the troll / flame-bait threads usually bring up some technical issues. That one, to steal a term from dianebrat, was nothing but a train wreck.

There are two ways to interpret that statement.

In context, it seems evident your intent was, "It had NOTHING to do with people criticizing TiVo". It also could be interpreted as, "It had NOTHING to do with TiVo DVRs". It fits for both interpretations, however.

That can be a really difficult line to walk, but it seems to be the case they don't try to throw their weight around here. Such is not the case for many corporate sponsored public websites. Assuming it is indeed true, my hat is off to them for it.

My hat is definitely off to you for stepping on that obnoxious thread.

Yeah, it's a hoot to read. Unfortunately, no one has been publicly bad over there for quite some time. It's a little sad, actually. I keep scanning it hoping someone new will have made an ass of themselves for our entertainment.

Oh, they are usually far more interesting and much more fun than this one.

I suspect a lot of them will never get that sort of message. It definitely sends a message to the rest of the forum participants, though.

Well, I'm not going to argue that point, but it definitely very quickly became something not at all related to TiVo, and even the Coffee House is supposed to be at least somewhat TiVo related. It wasn't even a reasonable religious or political discussion , though. All it was was a bunch of fools spouting hateful nonsense on both sides of the fence. What a crock of...
