Maybe I got the wrong model

New to TiVo. I got the Premiere model with 2 tuners. I think the model is tcd748500, it's too small to read to be sure.

I have ordered cable tv for the basic channels they are coming to install it next week.

I am currently using an antenna and seems to work ok.

I understand that you can only use two channels at a time. So if I am watching one I can only record one more. Is only two tuners a problem? It's easy to go back to the store and get the 4 tuner model.

If I did get the 4 tuner model I understand that doesn't work with an antenna. Is there some kind of box I can plug the antenna into do that I can then plug that into the TiVo? Or am I then stuck with always having cable?

The Tivo models are TCD746320, TCD746500 for the 2 tuner models. They record 2 channels at once and you can watch a recorded show at the same time. This can record from cable (analog or digital), as well as antenna. Of course, you can watch 1 channel and it record from the other tuner, but that is only if you are watching live TV.

The 4 tuner models are only for digital cable and no antenna, not even a digital converter box.

Most that have the 4 tuner model and want to cut the cost of cable, They would not be able to use this model any more without digital cable service.

Tivo is not meant to replace the cable service, it is just a Digital Recording device that goes in addition to the cable TV service or antenna, albeit an extra cost due to the Tivo box cost and Tivo subscription prices.

If you go with a 4 tuner model, you will be restricted to cable only.

Only you can decide if 2 tuners will be enough for you.
If you watch a lot of live TV or have more than 2 shows you like airing at the same time, then having only 2 tuners might be a problem.

The idea is to let the Tivo record your shows using both tuners, and you watch something else previously recorded.
Give your OTA season passes a higher priority over cable season passes. Cable shows tend to have a repeat airing, so if your Tivo has a conflict, it will automatically schedule the repeat episode.

That's a question only you can answer - how many tuners do you really need. If you can live with the limitations of the cable-only P4 and don't mind ponying up the extra bucks, then I'd take the P2 back and get the P4. The monthly sub or lifetime sub will be the same. One other thing to keep in mind is that the P2 will allow you to view and record analog channels if your cable company provides them. If that's good enough, then you can save the cost of a CableCard rental.
