Arrow - Pilot - 10/10/12

Owes a lot to Nolan's version of Batman and I had to get used to Stephen Arnell after several years of watching Justin Hartley on Smallville but overall, not bad.

Green Arrow was one of the few things I liked about Smallville at the end, so I'm looking forward to seeing this interpretation of the character and his DC universe... SP safely in place for now.

I caught snippets of the press release pilot a couple months ago, and caught more snippets while I was airing it tonight.

Can't wait to get home and actually watch the whole thing and hopefully enjoy it tonight.

(Yes, it's been said I work at the CBS affiliate in SLC, but we also have two CW Affiliates on the East coast we run from here)

Not bad.

Certainly more mature than Smallville and I like Queen's cover as an a**hole playboy.

The sister and the mother are new (although I did catch Oliver refer to her as "Speedy").

Of course this gets a Season Pas simply in the hope that we'll see Katie Cassidy in the Black Canary outfit with fishnets.

I like Justin Hartley better, but he would not have fit into this dark version of green arrow very well.

I also don't like the idea of a hit list. Too much like Revenge.

If that were the case the list would have stuff like:
Slept with my girlfriend's sister and then let her drown.

I'd already given up on Smallville before there was a Green Arrow on it.

I liked it and the eye candy was good. More workout scenes please!

I didn't even really know who Green Arrow was. We started watching it and my conversation with my SO went something like:

"Is this Robin Hood? I thought this was about a super hero"
"Do you know anything about Green Arrow?"
"No..."
"He's like a cross between Robin Hood and Batman."
"Oh, okay... why are there so many freaking super heroes with Green names?!"

I enjoyed it. I forgot about the Green Arrow from Smallville, but I left that show fairly early.

I hope this one sticks around for a while.

There's really only a few that you have to worry about.
Green Arrow.
Green Lantern.
The Green Hornet (but not the Seth Rogan version).

That is enough to get me confused about who is who, but now I can remember them as Movie Hottie, TV Hottie, and Seth Rogen.

But then you have the problem of "why are there so many freaking super heroes with Hottie names?! And Seth Rogan?!"

The Green Arrow was originally created as a poor mans version of Batman. Well not quite poor. But he had a cave, a car, a sidekick, etc.

Smallville use him hen they couldn't get the rights to Batman.

Yes, the Arrowcar, the Arrowcave, and my personal favorite - the Arrowplane.

The original broadcast in my area was hosed by constant drops in the signal that caused pops, hisses, and lines on the screen. I'm hoping that the encore airign tonight will be better, if not I'll prolly be a bit of a torrent hound.

I got some of those glitches too, but not enough that it made me turn it off and get it elsewhere.

I liked it well enough. Just a couple of things bothered me.

I kept wondering "why Laurel instead of Dinah"? But when I checked imdb, they list the character as "Dinah Laurel Lance".

Some green makeup around his eyes will keep people from recognizing him under that hood? At least Smallville did a better job of keeping his face in near-complete shadow.

Spoiler from the end-of-episode preview:

Spoiler:
Laurel/Dinah's wig looked white instead of blond and it looked AWFUL.

I only remember Green Arrow from the comic books and I don't remember his backstory. I always assumed he was an Olympic level archer who went into crime fighting. (Don't remember the comics as edgy at all but I quit reading DC in the 70's for a while so they may have made the character edgier)
I really enjoyed the pilot and hope they do some flashbacks to the island. He had to have encountered people or he would not have the combat skills he has. (I would love an arrow that you can stick into a server and steal all the data. Big reality ignore on that one.)

I don't think that was who you thought it was.

I think it was
Spoiler:
China White.

I agree with the first part but not the second, because
Spoiler:
it looked like Kelly Hu in a wig to me, and she is supposed to be playing China White and from what I read a few months back, would be appearing first in episode 2.

I did not read that.

Oh well....

Of course, they still have to explain the Deathstroke mask.

So I suspect we will be seeing flashbacks to find out what happened on the island.

I'm so glad that our local CW outlet is now in HD.

All comics got edgier but Green Arrow went for it when Speedy, his sidekick, got hooked on drugs. He went on a trek across America with Green Lantern at the time. Arrow has been edgier ever since. That was around 1969 into the early 70s.

Plus Mike Grell did a legendary run in the 80s called "The Longbow Hunters" that really turned up the grim 'n' gritty (this was, I believe, in the aftermath of Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen).

Being edgy by late-80s standards is really saying something!

I was expecting a variation on "The Cape", but was pleasantly surprised!

The silliest line was when Laurel (or Diana?) -- the living sister -- was at work when the news broke about Oliver being found alive. The news reporter said "[yadda-yadda-yadda] ... the son of a wealthy billionaire ... [yadda-yadda-yadda]" and then she turned off the tv everybody was watching!

I knew NOTHING. I just watched based on thsi thread and said "this is a comic book." Doh!

Alos the guy looks pretty buff after being a castaway having to live on roots and berries.

How izzit he's been gone for 5 years but he knows how to make magical Hardison computer-hacking arrows (that the target never noticed sticking on his wall?)

I'll stick with it. It's better - more original - than Revolution, even if it is a 4th generation rehash of the same kind of Batman superhero story.
