Why is The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror on so early?

I'm glad because I hated when they showed it after Halloween, but I wonder why they're showing it so early this year tonight. I hope it doesn't suck.

I prefer it to be on early than a week after Halloween.

Better question: Why'd you put that apostrophe in Simpsons?

Why they didn't schedule it for 10/21 is another matter. Fox knew well in advance that if NLCS Game 6 was necessary, it would air the game that afternoon; the NFL schedule has no 4:05 games on Fox that day. It is also not a Fox NFL doubleheader day, so it wasn't a question of "they needed a day where they could air all five shows, since they all have Halloween episodes this year". My best guess is, Fox had the NFL set the schedule for the possibility of an afternoon baseball game, but scheduled THOH early just in case it was stuck with a night game that would preempt it.

NLCS Game 6 (on Fox) will be a night game unless the ALCS (on TBS) goes to a 7th game.

Ugh, I've always hated these episodes. I decided to give it one more try but couldn't make it five minutes. I'm glad it's been gotten out of the way already this year.

Hahaha.. I was thinking "don't we get this question every year?", then I realized that it's really the OPPOSITE question, since usually (for many years at least), it's AFTER Halloween (as has been mentioned)

It used to be after for many years, but I think the past couple or so they've been before.

I think the one year when Oct 31 fell on a sunday, they actually hit it?

Is this the last season of the Simpsons? I remember there being something about it last year but can't think of them announcing it lately.

And, I too was surprised that Treehouse of Horror was played so early, but then thought about how many times it was shown after Halloween and shrugged.

The only real chuckle I got out of it was when Maude showed up and asked the devil to come back to bed.

I was going to watch this last night but realized that my DVR is set to keep only 5 episodes and it had been recorded over. Do you think they'll replay this ep soon or is there someplace online to see it (for free)?

Not that I know of - I think the current contracts with the actors go through 2014. Besides, it gets better ratings than three of the other four Sunday shows.

It should be available on fox.com on Monday 10/15. For whatever reason, Fox waits eight days before putting new episodes online.

Almost certainly, Fox will air it again this season, but it hasn't been consistent with when it happens over the years. Also, each year's THOH episode tends to air on the same night as the first airing of the following year's episode.

Here's the complete list (keep in mind that the show aired on Thursdays when the first four aired):
I - 10/25/1990
II - 10/31/1991
III - 10/30/1992
IV - 10/28/1993
V - 10/30/1994
VI - 10/29/1995
VII -10/27/1996
VIII - 10/26/1997
IX - 10/25/1998 (repeated Thu 10/29)
X -10/31/1999
XI -11/1/2000
XII - 11/6/2001
XIII - 11/3/2002
XIV - 11/2/2003
XV - 11/7/2004
XVI - 11/6/2005
XVII - 11/5/2006
XVIII - 11/4/2007
XIX - 11/2/2008
XX - 10/18/2009
XXI - 11/7/2010
XXII - 10/30/2011
XXIII - 10/7/2012

10/31 fell on a Sunday in 1993, 1999, 2004, and 2010.
In 1993, even though the show normally ran on Thursdays until July, 1994, Fox aired repeats of the first four Halloween episodes (this was the last time a Halloween episode more than one season old would air on Fox, because the show went into syndication in September, 1994, and Fox could not air episodes in syndication without jumping through quite a few hoops).
In 1999, Fox aired a new Halloween episode, as well as a repeat of the 1998 episode.
In 2004, Fox aired a repeat of the 2003 episode (it didn't schedule a new one in case it had to air World Series Game 7 that night).
In 2010, Fox aired World Series Game 4.

When I learned there's a new ep planned for next week, showing this so early made even less sense.

But when did they make the decision to air a new episode next Sunday. They probably didn't have a guarantee that their evening would be free from MLB until after they'd already started marketing the THOH episode for the 7th. And if something happens and the MLB game gets postponed next week and has to be played in the evening, that would have put THOH after Halloween again. So the 7th was the latest date prior to Halloween that they could guarantee it would be aired.

Actually I believe TV episode air dates are planned well in advance - I wouldn't be surprised if writers got some fixed dates in mind ahead of time in case they wanted to play off the date (e.g., Halloween episodes, seasonal episodes, etc) which are guaranteed to be aired on those dates and they'll work around them.

Since Fox also knows it needs to air baseball, they probably have a preliminary schedule and work the episodes in around it. So yeah, the 7th would probably be the latest date they could guarantee airtime because the baseball schedule probably said there may be something the rest of October.

And yeah, things happen - planned games get cancelled, TV gets pre-empted by something important, etc. And the Sunday after Halloween might have a special episode for that as well (being what, voting day?). Heck, didn't last year a baseball game preempt a bunch of regular series TV because it went to the 7th game or something?
