Elam pushed that bartender just a little bit too far.

Best episode of the series! I love a good gunfight and this was up there with some classic westerns.

Yeah, that gun battle was realistically messy. It was nice seeing most of the shots miss their target, and the sheer terror that people (including most of the gun-slingers) felt.

And Hawkins' last words were great.

Best ep of the season so far. I think while Durant recovers (in Chicago?) all hell is going to break loose in that town. Should be a fun ride.

Where did the Swede get the case of rifles? I'm assuming they were new rifles.

He does seem, in general, to have difficulty knowing how far he can go with anybody. Which is an interesting tack for a 21st-century TV show to take...the black man who doesn't know his place. I assume they're going somewhere much more interesting than having him slapped down at every turn.

I enjoy this show. Can't believe season 2 is half over already.

The entire series has been (to my limited knowledge) realistically messy. That's what makes it so attractive to me...it's not even close to any cookie-cutter western I've ever seen....

I assumed they were the rifles from the armory that Elam found empty when trying to arm the shop keepers before the gun fight.

Yes, his last words were great but I liked the follow up even better (paraphrased because I can't remember them exactly)...

Cullen: "Dammit Elam, he wasn't done with his last words."

Elam: "Yes he was."

Excellent episode, my favorite of the series to date... I actually appreciate that Elam is suffering the consequences of 'not knowing his place' since it's far more realistic than ignoring his race.

Exactly what I was referring to...

I think it is realistic if he is representing a mixed race guy of the time. If so, he acts exactly as I'd expect with an entitlement attitude and consequential disappointments. It was a great episode, IMO.

Elam's character is extremely raw and real in so many ways.

I didn't realize Elam is mixed.

I'll admit I never heard of Common but he does a good job in the role.

Elam didn't get that skin color by accident.

I don't know that the story line has ever said he was mixed though.....

And I agree about the guns the swede had, I think they came from the Armory that was suddenly empty.

I never heard anything directly about him being mixed. However, the "high yellow" comment made by one of the other black workers puts it in play. He is not a black character who happens to be played by an actor who is fair-skinned.

(Common is a rapper. )

I thought it did. Unless I am mis-remembering, his mother was a slave and his father was a slave owner. I thought Elam told Bohannan that when they were camped out one night last season.

I remember this now that you mention it.

Aren't the black railroad workers all ex slaves? The only way slaves got lighter skin was if somebody in the master's lineage was messing around with a female slave. All the other black workers have dark skin. Elam is the only one with a lighter complexion.

I don't know why I just thought of this but shouldn't there be at least one black whore in camp?

Yes, Elam's father is a white man who owned his mother. I recall that his father would bring him into the big house and taught him to read.

There were whores of all ethnicities in the salons back then. They often (not always) discriminated on patrons served but they tended to provide a variety of women. Maybe it is because the town isn't really developed yet.

Speaking on ethnicities. I read on wiki that one of the complaints was the lack of Chinese workers. Their excuse was to focus on Union Pacific due to budget -- the one line that didn't have the Chinese working it.

Or a woman messes around with a male slave. The child is usually given up after birth if they can't pass though.
