Netflix restructures API program to focus on product support

Not sure what this means, anyone?

For TiVo users, nothing.

For existing sites that access the public Netflix API (like http://instantwatcher.com/), nothing. They are grand-fathered in. Will they eventually (years from now) shut that down too? Who knows.

It just means there won't be any new websites coming online that use the public Netflix API, because Netflix is no longer issuing new keys to the API. No API key = no access to Netflix data (titles, availability dates, etc).

They're shutting down the public API. Existing users are grandfathered. They convey this news in absurdly oblique language, that says exactly the opposite of what it means.

Presumably they'll still enter into private partnerships.

I was not aware that anyone could “publicly” access Netflix. Without paying for it?

Don't worry, you don't get free streaming videos via the public API. You get metadata and other info.

Does anyone know if this will have an impact on Meta Generator 3?

This? http://pytivo.sourceforge.net/forum/...n-3-t1786.html

Maybe PM dlfl - pretty sure that he posts on TiVo Community forums too.

Don't know anything about MG, but if it is currently using the Netflix API, it *should* be fine. The only potential exception to that might be what Netflix uses, if anything, to determine whether something is "actively" calling the API. I believe they referenced that only keys "actively" using the API would stay up.

Hopefully that just means something like 1 or more requests to the API over the last 30 days. But they could consider "active" to be something like 1000+ calls to the API within the last 30 days.

The Netflix API handles 2 billion API requests. Every day.

No apparent problem so far.....fingers crossed. I would hope MG3 provides enough queries to avoid being classified as unused.
