Most overratted TV shows (past and present)

I'm bored today, nobody is at work and there's not a whole lot of work to do, so....a good day to get into a knock down drag out about overrated shows.

Of course this will turn into popular shows we don't like....but how about we put this spin on it....

Shows you watch (or watched) that you thought were ok, but not the "best show on TV" that fans and critics gush about.

My choices:

Current:
Breaking Bad
Girls

Past:
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Bob Newhart Show.

And to throw in one that people love, but I have watched a few episodes and didn't see the love:
The Wire

Based strictly on the reaction here, I'd say "Mad Men".

I started watching it on Netflix last year and I think I've seen three episodes to date. It's just not my go-to show when I have nothing on the DVR.

I don't know that "Girls" is over-rated. It doesn't really count when only the critics like it. I like "Breaking Bad", but I have to disagree with you on MTM and "The Bob Newhart Show". Those have gone on to be enduring classics. No one will be watching "Girls" 40 years from now...

I think Mad Men might fit for me too....I like it, just not love it.

I currently have 46 episodes sitting on my DVR and I find myself preferring to watch some old documentaries that I have recorded.

M*A*S*H

The first few seasons were OK and then they ran out of ideas and had to develop minor characters into major roles (and invent new characters) and it became a mere shadow of the original.

For that show, the first 3 (and maybe into the first season or two of BJ and Potter) it was some of the funniest TV ever. Once Frank Burns left, the show was horrible....and most overrated finale ever. But I still watched.

M*A*S*H became overly preachy. IMHO, that was the downfall of the show.

This. I agree the early years were the best by far, but when Allan Alda got his huge preachy head, it sucked big time.

Buffy. Omg that show is awful. Bad premise, bad acting, bad scripts, just /bad/.

The movie was awesomely cheesy. The show was a big bag of suck.

I think "Mad Men" is the very definition of overrated.

I think you guys are guilty of selective memory (and Alfer, go figure, of gross hyperbole). Yes, the show developed a particular editorial point of view, but the episodes where that was front and center were not as prevalent as you seem to think.

I'd submit that judging a show has that has been on for several seasons as "overrated" on the basis of the first three episodes it ever made is not exactly fair.

It's been said many times on this forum but in case you missed it, The Wire takes some time to get into. You have to give it more than just a few episodes. After the first one or two episodes (maybe even three) I was still trying to figure out what all the hubub was about. By the middle of season one I was hooked.

Yeah, I've seen that, and I hear the same about Breaking Bad, Mad Men and just about every other highly critical / fan favorite. The problem is....I don't have time to sit through 6 or 8 hours of suck to get to the "good" part. I knew from the first episode it wouldn't be a show for me. I watch a few more because everyone raved about it. I figured that was it.

That's ok, we all have different tastes. People here are killing Seinfeld, one of my all time favorites. I don't begrudge them for being wrong about it

(just kidding)

I didn't think Breaking Bad took time to "develop". Right out of the gate, it hits. And keeps hitting. "Mad Men" is different. It takes time, but overall, it's worth it too.

Firefly. Watched a few episodes. Could not continue.
Even my wife was making fun of me for trying to watch it despite of how cheesy and immature the show was.
