Question Did NBC broadcast the Olympics in 1080p at all? Why haven't Tivos started to allow 1

Does anybody know if NBC broadcast the Olympics in 1080p at all - either Over The Air or cable?

Why haven't Tivos started to allow 1080p recording? (I know no broadcasters have started sending 1080p channels. But why hasn't Tivo built in this functionality?

So far, no networks broadcast in 1080p, only 720p, and 1080i. NBC is 1080i.

ATSC was updated to include a standard for 1080P but it uses MPEG4. No one broadcasts using this standard since many of the original ATSC receivers could only process MPEG2. I don't believe you'll ever see commercial broadcast of 1080P OTA.

As far as I know TiVo records what ever digital stream cable or OTA is feeding it, "as is", so are you sure if they started sending 1080p signals the Premiere couldn't record them? As others have said you will not likely get 1080P from OTA anytime soon, however cable could start sending 1080P in the MPEG4 format at anytime - I believe Dishnetwork already does this via a premium move channel.

tivo settings menu indicates "pass through only for 1080p".

any word on if tivo plans to include 1080p recordings in the future?

is hard disk space and processing power the main hurdles?

its a hardware issue, the Tivo can't do the overlays (guide/min-guide/infobar) on a 1080p stream hence the pass through only stipulation.

if overlays are the only issue, then why not just allow recording 1080p from a special, non-overlay menu?

sounds like tivo has a long way to go before the advent of 4k. since 1080p even seems to be a hurdle for them

earlier, somebody said that 1080p will never be over the air. do you think the FCC auctioning of more bandwidth over the coming years can help allievate this problem? maybe one day even 4k over the air?

I don't think you will see 1080p over the air anytime soon because if they broadcast in 1080p they can not have their sub channels

The units you are buying now are not intended to handle everything that is to come. I would guess the commercial selling lifespan of a TiVo is 3-5 years max, probably less.

[Aside: this has nothing to do with how long they last; I am talking about how long a "series" stays on the market.]

There is -zero- chance 4k is coming to regular TV in the next few years. Maybe five or ten years? And by then, there will be a newer model.

Spend your brain cells worrying about something else.

I agree. There will be at least several newer tivo models before we see 4K And by then i am sure it will support it But yes you are talking years
