Hell On Wheels - Purged Away With Blood - 9/16/12

Another good episode IMO in a very good season. This was #6 and I think at the end they said "3 more episodes". So there is only 9 or am I (which is likely) confused?

There are four more episodes, but the last two are airing together.

This one was very good with the 19th century domestic terror.

Ah ok, a 2 hour finale, that makes sense. The Swede sure is an instigator

Need to string up the Swede. Also, the show is good but how about a little happiness once in a while?

To paraphrase Omar from The Wire, the Swede needs to get got.

There's no evidence but I think Joseph's going to return to his tribe and become a badass Indian nemesis for Bohannon.

How did they telegraph from a moving train or did the Rev strategically blow up the rails at a point that they could tap into the lines? Did telegraph messages have some sort of header record that told each station who the message was meant for?

The season started off slow, but the last 3 episodes have gotten a LOT better. I was close to losing interest but now it's become must see.

Once the train is stopped its a simple matter to scale one of the telegraph poles and clip leads from a telegraph key onto the wires.

And since the wires run on poles next to the track (since the railroad was laying them primarily for its own use[1]) pretty much any point you stop a train is a spot where you could tap into the wires.

IIRC Cavalry out west sometimes carried a telegraph key and wires so they could tap into the link to send information if necessary (or was that just in movies?)

[1]It really helps to be able to signal the next station that you're sending a train through so they know not to allow anyone going the other way past. More important on single tracked railroads where you can put oposite traffic on different sets of rails, but need to pull one train off onto a siding if it's going to be passed from either direction

I don't remember seeing poles along the track in the long shots of the stopped train. I do remember seeing a pole through the window of the car when stopped. Wish I hadn't deleted this episode so I could check but I'm sure it will run many more times.

That's what I was gonna say, too. Don't remember seeing telegraph poles, but I can undelete/recover the show and check tonight.

Hmmm, I didn't remember if there were poles in the shot (and thinking back I can't recall any).

But historically there should have been poles there. (the railroad puts them up and there's no reason for them to divert them away from the tracks). So it didn't bother me that they had telegraph access.

But I guess I was more speaking from how it would have been rather than what I could recall seeing in the show . If they failed to show the telegraph poles/wires that's certainly a scenery gaff.

There are poles, just the shot of Bohannon looking through scope, there 7 poles in that shot. Looks to be every 20 feet?

Yeah, I just recovered the show, watched it, and there are poles EVERYWHERE along the rail line. Don't know how I missed them, but I guess that's what happens when you aren't particularly looking for something -- you just don't see it.

I just watched the AMC online parts and the poles are definitely there except in the dream sequence. Maybe that's what I was remembering.

Neat information, but some details: The Rev and his Indian bandits would have had to have somebody climb the pole to clip on. I guess the telegraph guy on the train would be the guy. We never did see what happened to him but I guess he was killed with all of the other red shirts.

Bohannon says that Durant sent the message to Hell on Wheels and "not east." Wouldn't that pair of wires be a party line going both ways? I guess we assume that it's a violation for another station to listen in to message not addressed to them.

Random point: Eva seemed to know what the racooon-eyed lead Indian was chanting but she never told anyone.

I think you're right about any message going to both telegraph stations. (Unless the guy who clipped into the wires also physically cut the link back East)

I think telegraph lines of that era used a single wire with ground completing the circuit.
