'Luther', premiering Sunday on BBC America

http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/413/index.jsp

Idris Elba (The Wire) plays detective John Luther in this U.K. series. This is a great series. The acting is great. I watched the series as it originally aired in the U.K. and enjoyed each episode. The "bad guys" are very interesting in this series.

Quote:
Luther is a gripping, psychological thriller driven by a brilliant and emotionally impulsive detective tormented by the darker side of humanity.

A self-destructive near-genius, Luther might just be as dangerous as the depraved criminals he hunts. In each episode, the murderer's identity is known from the start, focusing the drama on the psychological duel between predator and prey.

There's two shows airing on Sunday night - one an hour, and the other an hour-fifteen, if I'm remembering correctly. One is an 'about the show', I think??? Not at the TiVo right now, so I can't check.

I'm looking forward to this one

I thought it was good but pretty formulaic for a British show, they role these things out every few months.

I see that BBC America is allowing 75 minutes per episode. Was the show 1 hour without interruption when broadcast in the UK?

Several UK imports have been edited in order to fit commercials in (for example, the butchering job that A&E did on Spooks to create MI-5). In the old days, BBC America would insert commercials, but, at least add time so that no original material was cut so that 30 minute shows like the Office were shown in 40 minute blicks. I hope that is the cast for Luther.

This description sounds a lot like Cracker - the best tv drama ever made. (The Brit version obviously, not the American abortion)

Just watched the first ep. It didn't leave much of an impression on me. If not for Elba's screen presence it would be completely forgettable.

Not in the first ep. That villain would fit nicely in an episode of Monk or Psych, but felt false to me in this story.

I'm a complete whore for Brit shows, and I love Stringer Bell, but I thought it was weak. The villain was way over the hill and not credible. And no CCTV of her attacking Luther's wife? There are several million CCTVs covering every inch of London.

I tried to watch it but just couldn't stand watching it since it wasn't in HD. I put it in my Netflix saved queue instead.

I enjoyed the show, but sadly, US viewers as a whole didn't. Only 191,000 tuned into BBC America.

I took a quick look. Who knew that Stringer Bell could do a credible Brit accent?

He's had 38 years to perfect it

By the way, what is that accent? It's very distinctive, and over the years I hear it from time to time, but never in a context where it's specifically identified...

One source says it was originally Cockney. However, my guess is that today even he would have a hard time knowing what it is now.

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf...accent_1140472

Elba tells Britain's Live magazine, "Mastering an American accent was my most difficult challenge. It took me three years to get it right. It seemed to me the ultimate test was to convince real Americans I was one of them - so I'd climb into a cab and try to pass myself off as an American.

"Cab drivers tended to fall for it. It was harder to convince in social situations. Women would look at me suspiciously and ask where I was really from. For those three years, every day was an exam day. Some days I passed, some days I didn't. By the time I came to audition for The Wire, I was able to pass myself off as an actor from Brooklyn."

What you're saying but.. I wonder if he knows he's back to his original accent?

I toured England, Scotland and Ireland for just a couple of weeks in high school. In just a few days in London we were all all talking like John Lennon in the chemist shop.

Finally got to this on my NP list. I watched the first episode and liked it a lot. The second episode (Sniper) - not as much, but still good. That's as far as I got so far.

I really like the main baddie. She's convincingly creepy.

The "inside look" mentioned a series 2 - has that already aired in the UK or - well - is there a series 2?

Not yet.

They've ordered two two-hour specials for next year.

More 'Luther' in production in U.K., but BBC America decision awaits

http://weblogs.variety.com/on_the_ai...11/luther.html

There is a question if Series 2 will even air in the States on BBC America.

Quote:
The season-one finale of "Luther" airs Sunday on BBC America, and though the Idris Elba/Ruth Wilson combo is back in production for more in the U.K., a spokesperson for BBC America said that it will be a month or two before the cabler decides whether more "Luther" will be aired Stateside.

The second season of 'Luther' will air here in the States on October 5th 2011 on BBC America. It's going to air first in the U.K. on June 14, 2011.

So for those that can't wait, I'm sure episodes will make it onto the internet shortly after airing in the U.K.

Thanks for the reminder. My Season Pass is still active.

Maybe BBC America will be HD here by October.

My wife and I just cruised through Season 1 in a matter of 3 nights. We really enjoyed it.

Have now watched S02E01, so we're caught up with the UK viewers!

Due to this thread, I started watching this show this morning on Netflix. I'm now on episode 4 and enjoying it. I've seen so many American crime shows. It is nice to see one in the UK.

Thread resurrection alert!

Having been meaning to watch this show for some time, we finally got around to seeing the first episode on Netflix streaming last night. Very impressed!

I'm sure we'll burn through the rest pretty quickly.

Thank you, Obama, for taking over regular network TV last night!
