Anybody watching Auction Kings on Discovery?

I've seen 1 episode and enjoyed it. It's about this auction company in Atlanta. Very similiar to Pawn Stars where people bring in crazy stuff and then the auction house brings in experts, but the difference is the auction house just takes 20% and sells it for the buyers.

Here's a link to the show: http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/auction-kings/

I like it too. Especially like the payoff at the end when we see how much the items actually sell for. And some are going dirt cheap.

It's not as good as Pawn Stars, but still amusing. They don't seem to do a good job attracting the right crowd for some of their higher end items...

I've found it vaguely interesting the couple of episodes I've seen, but I agree, I don't think they're really doing a good job of advertising what they're selling. Of course, part of this falls on the people bringing them stuff to auction, and them not looking for a better venue. It seems like the guy has a reputation for a very eclectic set of items, and so you're getting people looking for that, but to run a high-dollar item through there is just plain stupid.

I'd be vaguely curious what the time frame really is between when things come in and when they're sold. They make it look like it's in the same week, but I don't know that I believe that (and if it is, it goes a long way towards explaining why they don't get the right types of people in for some of these items).

That said, if I was in the area, I could see stopping by from time to time for their auctions.

The guys does make mention to "We have an auction coming up"...so I would say it is either weekly or monthly. In fact, most auction houses I've heard of have them weekly.

That vampire killing kit was pretty dang awesome!

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if they have auctions weekly. But that doesn't mean that the things that come in on a given week are going out in that next auction. That's what I'm wondering about. They make it look like that's true, but I'd really be shocked if that was happening (but it would go a long ways towards explaining some of the low values they're getting on certain items).

There probably is some lag time, because in 1 episode with the psalm book, she had some collector on the phone from Russia (IIRC) so I'm sure that would take some time to line up...but I'd say for the most part they probably only hang on to things for a week.

Isn't that one old though? I know there have been several car auction shows on HDnet.

The ones I listed just started or are just starting this season.

I got curious and did some looking, looks like they have about 1 auction a month, so you'd think there'd be some time to do some advertising. They do have a brochure for items in the upcoming auction, but I found it a bit sparse on information.

Ok, yeah, there's a lot of stuff that probably doesn't need much in the way of advertising. But a snooker table used by the Stones? African chief chairs? To me these are items that just scream for trying to cast a little wider net on who you get in to look at them.

But then, he doesn't really seem to be living too poorly, so he probably knows more than I do about doing this .

Just curious - has they mentioned the 1st edition Gone with the Wind autographed by Margaret Mitchell yet?

Saw it mentioned in a commercial (probably a teaser prior to the start of the season)... and was just curious how it turned out.

Spoiler:
Fake. The book expert pointed out several differences in the signature and declined to authenticate it.

I watched a couple of episodes and it was just...boring. They didn't even make the items that should have been interesting, well, interesting.

I watched a couple episodes of Auctioneer$ last month (on TLC), which was pretty good. It's a much bigger auction house than Auction Kings. But it seems to have disappeared from the guide.

You may be right, but there is a run "Chasing Classic Cars" airing on HD net now. As far as I know they are new episodes, but the Futon Critic lists the show as "completed its current season".

I'm not a big fan of their new "segment" where they follow around the 2 brothers that are "pickers".

I hate the 2 brothers! They are annoying and not entertaining at all.

I hit FF as soon as I see them come on.

Totally agree. And the stuff they find isn't even interesting.

What is it with shows trying to add segments I don't want? Drop the brothers from this show, and drop Rick's family from American Restoration!
