Using a regular HD for added recording space?

Rather then buying the 1 TB "DVR Expander" for $199.00 my thought was to buy a Western Digital 3TB drive for $149.00 and buy a cable. Guess what? Can't buy the cable anywhere. I checked Weaknees and didn't see it. A couple questions..

Can you attach a 3 TB Western Digital to the tivo with no problems? (via the eSata port, not looking to open it up)
Where can I buy a cable that has the connection for the WD HD (sorry i don't know the name of that connector) on one end and the eSata connector that goes into the tivo on the other end?

Probably eBay for the cable, but from what I understand it will not work anyway. The Premier units will not not recognize any external hard drive other than the My DVR Explander unit that you mentioned. If you do get another external HD to work, please post back.

Opening the box and upgrading the internal drive is the best way to expand recording space. Costs less and you end up with only one point of failure rather than two if you add an external expander. With an expander, a failure of either drive kills all of your recordings. The cheapest option, if the recordings are transferrable, is to copy some to your PC.

Largest drive supported by TiVo is 2TB.

SPALDINGCLAN...hello don't you mean "DVR expander"? If so, the only price i've found is $199.00 here:
http://www.tivo.com/products/tivo-ac...age/index.html

Could you please post a link to the one at your price? This is a 1 TB drive.

thanks!
