Are Premiere XL4 boxes future-proof for 3d content?

Hi,

I am planning to buy a Premiere XL4 in the next weeks, potentially with lifetime subscription. My TV is already 3d-enabled, and I'd like to make sure that my Tivo investment is "future-proof" for 3d content coming from the cable card tuner(I'm on Comcast) or from apps such as Netflix. Is the XL4 technically capable of doing this?

I saw an earlier post titled "Comcast adds TiVo Series 3, Premiere boxes to the 3D compatible list", but I'm not sure how much it applies. I would post the link, except I'm not allowed yet.

Thanks,
Alex

Cable companies use a trick that makes the 3D channels compatible with all devices. Instead of using special encoding, like they do for 3D BluRays, they simply split a normal video frame in half and squish the picture for the right eye on one half and the picture for the left eye on the other half. The TV then displays each half for the appropriate eye using internal processing. You end up with half the horizontal or vertical resolution (it can be split either way) but compatibility is universal. Because of that 3D should work with any HD capable TiVo, even an old OLED Series 3 unit.

The XL4 passes through the 3D signal but does not support the HDMI flag that tells the TV its 3D content, so you will have to manually change modes on the TV. I got used to it all happening automatically on my DirecTV boxes so I find this a step back.
