So, my half-assed "solution" to this problem... I recalled that sending the code twice was actually normal for IR remotes (and the receiving device is supposed to deal with this), and I figured that, if I could let the first code through but block the second one, it might work. And, it does. I press the key, then quickly move my hand in front of the transmitter window. Most of the time, I can mute/unmute or power off this way.
