Arlo Given may be half senile but he's also a jerk.

Archie Bunker <-> Mike Stivic were complementary jerks.
Fred Sanford is another good candidate.
But the winner, IMHO, would be Basil Fawlty. Yes, he was a British sitcom character, but QUITE the JERK!

When the show was opposite and had to compete with the campy Batman they made him a blundering clown and brought on all of the silly plots, campy props, and aliens to fight.

The original LiS pilot didn't have Doctor Smith (the ship was knocked off course by an asteroid field, I think). The episode you describe was the first aired episode, but the robot wasn't programmed to steer the ship off course; it was programmed to destroy the life support system eight hours into the flight.
"The version I heard was," Dr. Smith was only supposed to be on for something like eight episodes, which is why Jonathan Harris always got a "Special Guest Star" credit, but somebody at CBS realized that the only reason people were watching the show was because of the interaction between Dr. Smith and the robot.

Yes.
In the pilot episode, the robot was programmed to destroy the life support system and the automated navigation system of the spacecraft.
This way, from the telemetry they'd receive on earth, it would look like the ship had suffered a massive systems failure that killed the passengers in suspended animation and shot the ship randomly off course at maximum speed. Since the telemetry would show everyone aboard as dead, and since they could never build/launch a ship in time that would catch up with the Jupiter II traveling at maximum speed, they'd simply write the ship off as a loss and never investigate further.
However, Dr. Smith got trapped aboard. He tried to stop the robot from destroying things on his own, and when he failed, began to wake the sleeping crew for help. They managed to stop the robot from destroying life support, but not navigation. Hence, they became "Lost in Space".
During the robot's rampage, it droned: "Destroy... destroy... destroy". It was both frighting and comical!
Dr. Smith was actually pretty sinister in that first epiosde. They quickly morphed him into the cowardly, selfish, sniveling crybaby.

Poor ole Lost in Space. It was based on a Dell comic, Space Family Robinson. There were no bad guys, they just traveled from planet to planet trying to survive. The show started out that way and then quickly turned to crap. I was too old for it being in high school. This was chosen over Star Trek which never got to horribly silly though the third season was pretty bad.

I think Blackadder was very much a self serving Jerk, much moreso than Basil. I think you can lose how nasty he really was in the midst of the outlandishness of the show. I also think it was more evident in the earlier series' than in the WWI era stuff.

But Arthur Spooner was hilarious.

I also second whoever mentioned Perry from Scrubs (why can I not remember his Dr. last name?).
I throw in Jeff Winger from Community. A real, big jerk.
