Fringe - 4/13/12

Lost power for a bit Friday night and only a little over 1/2 of this ep recorded. It cut out just after the cab accident with the girl and she was throwing/coughing up what looked like pop.

What happened the rest of the ep?

In the Blue universe (or is it amber now?), the cab crashed and went off a bridge and the woman inside it drowned. In the Red universe, the same woman was in a pet store (possibly buying food for her domesticated badger) and suffered the same fate.

To investigate the incidents, the Astrids were communicating with the Olivias from their own universes and comparing notes (Walter was in the Red universe and Peter in the Blue). They determined that it was the same woman in each universe and somehow the device in the cab made them both experience the same event.

After they were done investigating the scenes, Walter, Olivia, and Lincoln were reporting to Broyles (Red) about the event. When Broyles asked Walter what Jones was planning, Walter snapped at him that he didn't know. Walter later apologized, saying that he's upset because his original crossing over is what allowed Jones to do what he's doing. Broyles (who it had already been revealed was working with Jones in exchange for medicine to help his son) asked Walter if he would still have done what he did, knowing how it turned out. Walter said that before meeting the adult Peter, he would have said no, but now he's not sure he would have done anything differently.

We see Broyles injecting his son with the medicine he received from Jones as his son tells his how great his day was (he was picked first in a game at school, and a girl told him she liked him -- two things that had never happened before).

Walter was staying with Olivia while in the Red universe, and he wakes up to find her drunk and mourning her Lincoln. As they get to talking, she says that she knows that Jones has a mole in Fringe Division, but they can't find any evidence. This leads them to discuss if the mole is so high up that he's able to hide the evidence, which makes Walter suggest Broyles. Olivia dismisses the idea initially, but considers the possibility.

Olivia goes and visits Nina where she is being held and tells her that Broyles has been arrested and confessed to being the mole. At first, it looks like Nina won't buy the ruse, but then confirms Olivia's suspicions.

As Olivia and Lincoln debate whether or not Nina was telling the truth, Astrid tells them that Broyles has not been heard from and he has disabled his tracking device. Cut to, Broyles with the device he was given by Jones preparing to visit Liberty Island.

Broyles goes through security at Liberty Island and Olivia and Lincoln get alerted, so they race to stop him.

We see Broyles standing in front of the bridge machine with Jones' device in his hand. Then, the other Broyles walks into the picture and it turns out that Red Broyles confessed and turned himself in to Blue Broyles.

Walter returns to the Blue universe but Lincoln stays behind telling Olivia that he's going to stay until they find the people who killed Red Lincoln.

The episodes ended with Red Broyles in custody being brought past Nina's holding cell and placed into one of his own. Then, we see Walter back at his lab telling Peter and Blue Olivia that he's figured out what Jones is attempting to do -- collapse both universes.

So Col. Broyles isn't a shapeshifter but was trying to save his son.
Interesting.
I wonder if Walter could duplicate the cure.

I liked the fact that B-royles turned himself in, but other than manufactured plot tension, there was absolutely no reason to go to Liberty Island to surrender himself over to... himself.

And that was a great summary, getbak.

It seems they are moving towards a series wrap-up. Lot's of loose ends are being tied up fast. I was hoping for one more season.

The actors must love being on this show as they get to play multiple characters. It's amazing how the same person can seem to be a different person with some good acting.

I read somewhere (very vague spoiler, probably not needed but I'll hide it anyway):

Spoiler:
They just wrapped filming for the seasons and they shot two endings. One for a season finale, and one for a series finale in case they are not renewed.

It's been predicted that this is Fringe's last season - Fox's "friday nights aren't a death sentence" hubris aside, it was pretty much the end of the line.

The ratings for Fringe prove it, unfortunately. There's a rumor that should the numbers hit some magic number it'll be renewed, but I'm sure the vast majority of people watching Fringe have to do so via recordings and probably aren't counted as highly in the ratings.

Though, apparently Fringe has been doing this for every season (except maybe the 2nd when the renewal came early).

When will any piece of David Robert Jones motives be revealed? That's a huge black hole to this seasons arc. They don't need to reveal much, but as it stands all we know is that he might want to destroy both universes. The Fringe arc is nearly as simple as The Mentalist where killer Red John has followers for no apparent reason. I understand they explained that B-royles was protecting his son, but what are the rest of this these villians up to?

For me great science fiction arcs build the villians case and actually gathers audience sympathy for them of some sort. It is a fundamental problem in Walking Dead that the zombies are one dimensional and I think the writers acknowledged this and have attempted to create more substance to the arc. Fringe has moved away from doing this and portrayed David Robert Jones more like the "The Monster of the Season" to go along with weekly events. I suppose I expected more from Fringe based on earlier seasons. The show has become more like Grimm and Supernatural which aren't my taste. Despite having a monster of the week from the beginning I thought during seasons 2-3 the series was moving towards something very different.

To demonstrate how sucky my powers of observation are, it wasn't until this episode that I noticed that the guy playing David Robert Jones is the same guy who plays Lane Pryce on Mad Men.

Yeah, he's Richard Harris's son. It's weird that he really looks a lot like his father, who was pretty hot, and yet always plays nut cases and bad guys. Lane is probably the most normal character I've ever seen him play, and he's pretty weird. He's a good actor, tho.

So Broyles gives himself up to the other universe but then is locked up in his same universe. I thought the whole idea was that he wanted to "defect" to the other side. Otherwise (as already mentioned), why go to Liberty island at all?

Because if he didn't, we wouldn't be tricked into thinking he was going to use the device.

And yes, this show is usually better than that.

But did we ever see the device he was supposed to attach to the machine (after he gave himself up)? I didn't. I'm wondering if he really did attach the device to the machine and then turn himself in, so Jones would continue to spare his son even though Broyles got "caught".

I just watched that scene. B-royles walks into the chamber with the machine, stares at it a moment, then takes the device out of his pocket and looks at it. Broyles immediately then walks up to him and says "I got your message." Cut to Bolivia and Lincoln rushing to get to the room in time... they enter and B-royles and his counterpart are still facing each other. B-royles turns around and says to Bolivia "I'm Sorry."

So there wasn't really any time for him to attach the device to the machine, even if he had intended to.

But no, technically we do not see the device after that.

They gave it to Walter to play with. And he was quite excited by it.

Thanks for clarifying that. I must have missed that they gave it to Walter. Maybe I just thought he was excited about something else.

I think you can also see it in Broyles's hands as he tells BOlivia that B-Broyles gave himself up...

I didn't have a problem with B-royles going to Liberty Island to turn himself in. I'm sure he wanted to explain himself to Broyles, who would be very sympathetic to his motivation, and the only place he could meet Broyles was at the Bridge.

And we've seen in a few episodes before - B-Astrid going to her counterpart at the time of need. After he put his son to bed I already knew he wasn't going to go through with it ... just didn't know how he was planning to get out of it.

Plus I don't think Broyles could have crossed over and just wandered out into the world without an escort. So Liberty Island is a reasonable place for them to have met. (And also, B-royles probably would want Jones, who may have had him under observation, to think he had done as ordered.)

Although Rob H. is right -- notwithstanding all that, B-royles going there was also an audience fake-out.

Spoiler on next week's trailer:

Spoiler:
Looks like we might be getting some closure on the Observer story too. I'm leaning more toward them ending the series this season. I will miss it.
