Slide remote worth it (closed doors)? Vs Ipad?
Hello -
Wondering the opinion these days on the Tivo Slide remote? My receiver and Tivo XL is behind doors of an antique wood cabinet. I hate having to open the doors every time.
What's general consensus on the Slide remote (now cheaper so worth considering for me)?
Is it actually effective behind doors (looks like with the USB receiver extender)?
I have an Ipad too - is it a bluetooth cxn between the ipad and the tivo so I could use that behind closed doors? Even if yes, I don't think I can turn the receiver on which I can do with a tivo remote.

They would both work through the doors. The iPad app uses wifi, not bluetooth, to control the TiVo. I use the slide to control a TiVo in the basement connected to a TV in the kitchen. I use the iPad app sometimes, but I prefer a dedicated remote. It's less than $45 at Amazon right now.

If your main purpose is to have a remote that works through a closed door, to use for basic functions (play, guide, etc), then the slider will work best.
If you want something to make it easier to find/type, then the ipad is hard to beat, but it doesn't make for a good primary remote.

I have never used the ipad app but I will say that the slide remote works great for my TIVO which is in my closet. I was hesitant in buying the remote due to some poor reviews of it but I have not had any issues at all.

The tivo bluetooth remote is much better since i dont have worry about dropping it and braking it. also much easyer to use

Thanks for all your input - I think an actual remote is the way to go b/c I certainly don't want the kids thinking my iPad is their domain now! Slide sounds like a good fit.

forgot to ask...
Oops - Sorry! Forgot to ask - if I end up with two Tivo Premieres behind the cabinet doors, from what I read, with the USB dongle attached, it can control each one separately, correct? If that's unplugged, it will try to control both, but with the USB connected, each sees its premiere individually, correct?

The slide can only control one TiVo. There's no DVR switch (like all new TiVo remotes), so you can only program one remote address.

Howdy....just make sure you get a slide where you can easily return it. Many have had problems with somewhat intermittent and delayed response. When it works like it's supposed to it's great. I've tried 2 with my S3 and both worked great for a few days and them became a bit intermittent.

Right but from what I read, if you *don't* use the USB connector, it defaults to Tivo 0 setting and that will control all Tivos in range (we have two in the cabinet). Wondering if I could set the second Tivo to "1" or "2" and then use the regular glow remote with that, then use the Slide with the main tv? Trying to get my family to understand the remotes!
(Would upgrade to a logitech harmony or the like but they don't seem perfect yet and I like the Tivo-intuitive and made remotes.)

I have two Logitech Harmony One remotes for both of my Premiere units and I can tell you that it does everything the original Tivo Remotes do (with the exception of the slide remote where you get a slide-out keyboard). It's cool how you have the thumbs up and down buttons on the display and you just push them to rate. The other issue you would run into is IR only with the Harmony one.
It does work great though!

I used to use one of those NextGen RF extenders for my closed cabinet as well. But once I got the Slide I was able to get rid of it. It's a more elegant solution since you don't have to worry about charging that little battery or worrying about IR blasters.
Of course, the benefit to the RF extender is that you can use it with multiple components (receiver, DVD player, etc.).

Both are awesome. I have both and love them. I highly recommend the slide remote and the price is pretty reasonable now.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I ordered a slide and am very excited about it! It will be great to use through the closed door! Also get to move my Glo upstairs to another Tivo which is an added benefit.
I am still going to think about the Harmony b/c we have behind the doors: the receiver, the two Tivos, separate Comcast STB (to watch on Demand), BluRay and a Wii. We also have a mac mini in there too to hold music. :0) There are WAY too many remotes right now!
I appreciate everyone's advice!

Got my slide today - love it! I actually don't mind the size although I do need to stop clicking the keyboard in and out - such a satisfying slide and snap. Used the keyboard to set up new fall season passes - fabulous! Played programs seamlessly through the antique wood doors of out tv cabinet. Programmed all the TV and receiver settings with no problem.
Fly in my ointment: the *receiver* needs the doors open to get signal (volume, power). Duh.
Any suggestions? Or did I just make an overly optimistic investment...
