help me convert one file

Hi,

I have one old tivo file recorded in August 2006 that I want to convert to a more universal format. Its a huge 8 Gig file.

I dont want to mess with converters and codes or what have you. I"m willing to pay someone to convert this for me as its the only remaining tie I have to tivo.

If interested, send me a note. We'll need to figure out an easy way to upload this somewhere for access to conversion...

Thanks,
SB

You could do this yourself.

If you're using a PC, you can use VideoReDo TV Suite.
Register for a trial key and get full functionality for a limited time.
You will need to have Tivo Desktop set up (at least partially) with the proper MAK applied.

I'm assuming you mean that you have a .TiVo file?

You're going to need the Media Access Key from the TiVo. It you don't have it, you're screwed.

There is no easy way to upload an 8 GB file. You'll be better off extracting the .mpg from the .TiVo yourself. Personally I like tivodecode for this purpose. It doesn't depend on TiVo Desktop, and it's cross-platform free software (not trialware), but you do still need that MAK.

Converting it to standard .mpg file is easy. I've used this tivodecode GUI before and it works pretty good...

No need to bother with VideoReDo and TiVo Desktop unless you also want to edit the file.

Eight Gigs is not huge. Indeed, few of the nearly 2000 video files on my server are that small, and some are as large as 35G.

I presume this is a file on your PC? If so, I fail to see how it is a tie to TiVo.

If its a .tivo file and you have the MAK for the tivo it came from, PM me. I'll take a look at doing it for you. You could send it to me on a thumb drive and I'll send it back.

Mak ?

Strange. Tivo Settings is not displaying my MAK. Is this because the unit hasnt connected to the server in a year or so?

Well, all hope might not be lost, if you're desperate.

It appears to me (a very casual user) that the tivodecode program has a quick way to verify that the correct MAK is being used. If my assumption is correct, then it should be very easy to brute force the MAK.

My MAK is ten digits but starts with zero, so really nine digits. If most are like mine, then it should be simple to try all possible MAKs in a reasonable amount of time.

E.g. if it takes 1 millisecond to verify a MAK, then brute forcing one billion tests should only take a few days on a multi-core machine. I don't think that TiVo went out of their way to make this encryption unbreakable.

If you have the TiVo Desktop software installed you can read the MAK from the registry using TDCM (the codec utility in the sticky at the top of this forum).

It may also show up in your account online at TiVo.

I think in theory the use of the MAK and TiVo Desktop presupposes the current existance of some sort of paid TiVo subscription.

Mine doesn't start with a zero.

Interesting. So there's 10 billion possibilities instead of a billion. But maybe the test for validity can be done in 10 usec instead of 1000 usec?

At any rate I'm not about to write and distribute such a program, since it would clearly be in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. I might have 99 problems but the Feds ain't one (and actually I don't have 99 problems).
