Its a wonderful thing that if it hits the fan everyone can be notified at one time regardless of what station your watching or listening to or what provider you use.
I only hope they can find a way to notify us via our cell phones too!

God forbid we ever need them to use it!!

It's down to 30 seconds now? Originally it was going to be three minutes, then last week they dropped it to a minute.

Yeah used to be 3 minutes and 30 seconds. I disagree with the increased government control over my TiVo(es). Local and State is bad enough but National on top of it?

Thats what they said on CNN today, and if you look up EAS on the web it shows just 30 seconds.

I dont see why they just cant do it like 4am like most do. TWC here in Dallas always does theirs at 4am.

Government has no interest in your Tivo, they're testing the alert system that will notify you if the stuff hits the fan.

What kills me is all the people protesting the test will be the ones screaming the loudest if the stuff hits the fan (why didn't the government warn us?). I guess some people just can't be pleased but trust me, the government has more to worry about than your Tivo...

I just wish they'd test it at 2AM instead of 2PM. I do appreciate the test so we're sure it works if/when needed.

My crappy local cable company has been doing an EAS test every week for the past 6 years, so this is nothing NEW. The fact that this will happen tomorrow means nothing to me.

How do I stop Comcast from doing this ALL THE F*ing time?

The loss of human life was minimized in Japan due to their preparation.

Stop complaining about 30 seconds of your TV life...

If you're worried about it so much, put your TiVos on standby so the recording won't get interrupted.

Sheesh!

Don't know, I have Comcast also and they told me the test are required. I guess all the other companies are breaking the law or is it Comcast has that one guy that interprets the rule differently from the rest???

Since all programming sources know the "test" is coming, isn't it likely they'll delay the start of all programming for the 30 seconds?

Actually, I think this is the first time the whole national system was even *tested* since it was implemented. Sure the local EAS has been used many times, but this is the first time it's nationwide. So it may even not work properly at all.

As for why, I guess it's just because they feel it's another way for government to get involved in people's lives.

And what truly NATIONAL event would the gov't warn us about that the news, internet, etc. didn't already blast out everywhere? No, a tsunami doesn't count. Short of a full nuke strike, in which case it wouldn't matter what warning we got anyway, I fail to see how this would ever get used. Gov't can't react quickly enough to matter, but the news can (see: 9/11). It's just another way that FEMA can justify some program office's budget.

More of a demo than test

If its at 2am, its a test. 2pm on all cable, satellite, ota and radio it's a demonstration.

I wonder when we'll get alerts on your facebook wall, twitter feed, im system, txt message or email.

Maybe they can wire up a national network of air raid alarms that.... Oh nevermind.

Either way, something is better than nothing.

Great tongue in cheek article from a reporter also questioning the usefulness of this system in today's world.

We all know the government always tells us the truth. It'll be nice to know that there'll be no other viewpoints to taint their message. [sarcasm off]

For all we know, the PACWAV11 tsunami "drills" on 11/9-10 may be so they have trainees in position for some nuclear-explosion-initiated tsunami in the North Pacific. Yeah, that's pretty whoo-woo - but my point is that if this asteroid (or any other) were to actually be on course to collide with our journey through space (instead of the near miss we've been told about just in the last couple days (What? - they didn't know about this longer than that?), would they really have announced it?

Of course not. Why would they announce it and send the global economies into a tailspin. People would panic, crime would be rampant. Better not to tell anyone until as late as possible to avoid those issues.

Maybe FEMA will work better now that it does not have a horse show manager as its head.

Trying to warn people of disasters is a governmental function. Though I doubt if the White House has anything to do with this. Thanks FEMA.

Stating the obvious... it's not the test people are concerned about.... people are afraid that once the government has the power to interrupt every TV in the US any time they like for as long as they like- they'll abuse it by activating it for non-emergencies, political messages, alerts from locations that are so far removed from you that the situation couldn't possibly effect you, etc...

Guess it's good to have- but looking back at the last 20 years, how many times would they have actually used (for legitimate purposes) the system to alert the whole US to some threat that concerned all 50 states. Once (9/11) perhaps?

well, I'm not surprised. Never got the EAS alert on my premiere.

For what ever reason, cox in Pawtucket RI has never had a EAS Test or Weather related EAS since I have been with them, almost a year now.

Wonder why I don't get them? I have cable cards.

One of my HR10-250s was playing live tv and it displayed the emergency broadcast.

The other HR10-250 was playing a recording and it did NOT display the emergency broadcast.

A series 3 OLED that I had playing a recording did NOT display the emergency broadcast.

I thought TiVos were supposed to detect the emergency signal and interrupt playback?

TiVo Premeir watching Fox News, no message. Megyn Kelly was talking about it, she said here we go, ok we are back but nothing happened. I was playing from the buffer and was not live. Maybe I had to be live? Strange!
