Amazing Race 3/13/11
Another "you are still racing?".
I seriously cannot stand Ron. Just the few minutes a week I have to see and hear him annoy the hell out of me. I know editing can make anyone seem like anything. But I have no doubt he's an ahole all the time, not just on the race.
Kent's demeanor is great but there's no way they deserve to stay in with the screwups they had.

Quite the meltdown from Vyxsin there. So it took them, what, six hours or more to drive to the airport?
I can't stand Ron either. If he stopped to eat one more bite of the dish they were pounding...

Worst driving since the two girls drove 3 hours up the coast of Chile (?) instead of crossing the mountains.
Edited to add. Debbie and Bianca drove 2 hours the wrong direction before turning around. Surprisingly, they were philiminated.

Two of the four weeks have been "to be continued". I assume that tonights takes the place of a regular "non elimination" leg.

I think it must have been more than that... I thought that Jaime and Cara left after midnight, and the couple teams before them were a couple hours before that. If the flight was at 9:50 and they missed it, they could have been driving for almost 12 hours. I understand that it's Japan and all, but she was carrying on about how she was so confused before they even got to the highway... get out of the car and go into a store or something and ask someone which way to the airport! And then once you get onto the highway, how do you drive so far in the wrong direction WITH a map?! I am almost certain I saw Narita on the map... even if you are having trouble reading the map or something, you should have some kind of comprehension that if you see the airport on the map X distance away from where you are, then it should take you about Y long to get there, and when it starts taking more than that, maybe it's time to re-evaluate.
Also, what was up with that meltdown at the top of the mountain? I am so confused about how she was "so confused"! It's not rocket science... you're looking for pictures of the zodiac among a bunch of things that are not pictures of the zodiac. Clearly you that's what you're doing because you already had a number of the chimes. You may be "so frustrated" because you cannot find the one you need, but confused? Really?
They do not deserve to still be racing. Between that whole driving fiasco, to leaving the passport on the ticket counter, to the meltdown on top of the mountain, and now to leaving the fanny pack in the gondola.

I can't believe that they actually caught up since the second flight was so far behind the first. And no penalty for not taking the required flight as specified in the directions? I figured it would either be another "You're still racing" or a non elim to keep everyone in it. Too bad that turned out to be the case.

Had Ron and Christina been in the bus with the Globetrotters yelling to stop the bus, there's no way they would have asked the driver to stop.

Maybe she did something like the guy before her. He was stalled out because he had two goats instead of a goat and a horse. What if the two charms were drawn very much like each other (especially compared to all the other charms)? What if she was 'reading' the goat and the horse as the same one, and thus could only find 11?
If you were freaking out because you thought you were about to get beaten, you might miss the fine details that made the horse and the goat look different from each other.
Edited to add: the teams at the tag end are probably exhausted. When you're tired, it's a lot easier to have a meltdown. Just ask the parents of any toddler.

We don't know that there is no penalty. They haven't yet been to the pit stop... or I guess it's the "still racing" stop.
I wonder if there is a penalty if they would give it then, or at the real pit stop. I think they should give it at the real one.

Yeah, I should have left that out since they are still going. But I will be disappointed if there isn't some kind of penalty since the flight was "required." If only because they had to keep the film crew on scene for another night because they got so turned around and lost. Plus the excuse at the zodiac challenge? "Our car broke down?" and paraphrasing from their interview "Its like poker, you dont want to show all your cards at once." What difference would it make if people knew the truth and your team got lost on the way there? Everyone else made the flight you didn't and even with car trouble Phil has said in VO before that no time credit will be given for things like that happening.
Plus I'm still confused how they ended up on the highway towards Tokyo, then apparently completely missed the city and went the wrong way for several hours.

Kent said the car broke down to keep the pressure on Zev and Justin. No one yet knows if there is a time penalty for missing the flight. Justin had pointed out Kent and Vykxin had arrived and Zev was under pressure to figure out his error before they finished the roadblock. If Kent had told Justin the real reason, he could have told Zev to relax as there would be a penalty.
I don't think there will be a penalty as they were delayed several hours waiting for the second flight. I think the biggest penalty I've seen in past seasons was 4 hours for skipping a task. It could be decided that the delay was severe enough to not warrant a penalty.

I'm not really clear on why there was a "required" flight. The voice over said that it was due to limited flight options, right? It didn't seem like Kent and Vyxsin had any problem getting on the next one.

I think after the meltdown that Vyxsin had in Japan, picking her to do the next task was a very bad idea.

Seems strange to me. I guess I assumed most people graduate from daddy to dad when they become teenagers.
They need to get rid of the two chicks who drove the wrong way. I mean really?

I hope Kent and Vyxsin can recover, there are several teams I'd rather see go before them.

I will be somewhat surprised if there is a penalty. They started out almost 6 hours behind leaving Japan. That is quite a penalty in it's own.
Speaking of penalties, the Globetrotters' 1/2 hour penalty sure was useful. This leg had so many equalizers, no team go gain an advantage until the very end. Maybe that is why the producers made it a "Keep Racing" leg.

I'd be surprised if people didn't have some issues. There were over 14000 feet. At that alt, you have only about 60% as much oxygen as at ground level. For vision and cognition reasons, the FAA requires pilots to be on Oxygen full time at that altitude.

I'll be surprised if they penalize them. Missing the flight and losing 6 hours seems like penalty enough.

Well, you would have to start. I never called him daddy. Pop, Dad or when referring to him, my father. But never daddy.

Yep, 30 minutes on top of 6 hours would seem rather silly. And if they get philiminated there would be no point anyway.
But I'll predict that they get their fanny pack back from the gondola lost & found and get back into the running. Hopefully they can beat Ron & Christina. At one point I was starting to get pretty annoyed with Christina as well. Seems some of her daddy is rubbing off on her.

Yes it was a "required" flight but by missing it they put themselves several hours behind. I would think that's penalty enough. I guess technically Ron and Christina could be penalized because they jumped on the "required" bus when it was already in route instead of at the beginning of the route. They took "illegal" transportation part of the way.

Yeah but the next one was 6 hours later. When they let teams book their own flights and there is more than one flight option they are never that far apart. They didn't want the teams that spread out I'm sure although it happened anyway

I have to think some type of penalty will be incurred regardless of their 6 hour delay. Otherwise why would they bother to put "Required" flight on the screen when the plane took off?

I think they said required flight just so they could skip showing everyone at the counter making their reservation as they usually do. I guess we find out next Sunday

I think the flight was "required" because they didn't want people trying to book tickets on some unsafe airline just to get there earlier.
Having done an altitude chamber test for work, I can attest that oxygen deprivation is very insidious. Granted we were at 25000 ft, but had I not known I was being tested I might not have realized anything until it was too late. My first time in the chamber, one of the other testees sailed right off into la-la land, though he seemed ok: he never would have put his mask on because he didn't think he needed it.
In that environment, it was definitely not a task for a moody Vyksin or Asperger'ed Zev. The "more rational" partner should have taken the task immediately.
