Installing Service Update

Model number: TCD540080.
After using Instantcake to restore the original hard drive and running Clear and Delete Everything my TiVo was still not working as it should. I tried taking out the battery to try resetting any BIOS that the system may have. After reinstalling the battery and restarting the TiVo it evidently downloaded program information and possibly a service update. When I checked the system information it showed pending restart, so I did a system restart. It then started Installing Service Update (This will take a few minutes). This service update has been installing for at least 24 hours. How long should it take to install the service update?

It depends.

First of all, are you using a dial up phone connection, or high speed internet?

If you bought an old version of instant cake and the core system software is outdated then that might need to be updated. For dial up, that can take a long time.

What version of software did you install?

A status of "pending restart" would mean that the update had already been downloaded and simply needed to be installed. The type of connection is irrelevant to software update installations.

It should only take about an hour. I'd unplug it, wait a minute, and plug it back in. If that does nothing to help the situation, you probably need to replace your approximately 5 year old original hard drive.

I tried the unplug and restart and have been using the TiVo for about 2 days now. It is working fine with the exception of occasionally changing to an incorrect channel when recording. But every time I try changing the cahannel with the TiVo remote it selects the correct channel. I am using the IR Blaster as Comcast recently disabled the serial port on my Motorola digital set top box.

I must have spoken too soon. This evening the model 540 TiVo locked up again. I had to unhook this TiVo and hook up my first TiVo which is a 240 model. I am going to use Instantcake to install the operating system for a 240 model onto the 80GB hard drive from the 540 model and install it into the 240 model. If the 240 model locks up with the 80GB drive as it did with the 540 model then the hard drive is suspect. The 240 model with the 40GB hard drive works fine.

I recently removed the 80GB hard drive from the TCD540080 model and used instantcake to install the TCD2400 operating system. I then installed the drive into the TCD240040 model and ran it through everything that needs to be done after upgrading the hard drive. The hard drive has been running flawlessly in the TCD240040 model. Previously I ran diagnostics on the hard drive using every diagnostic that I could find. I even did factory certification tests on it. The only thing that the tests showed was that the drive had been overtemp.

On Saturday (Nov 20th) I installed a 160GB SATA hard drive with TiVo TCD5400 model operating system into the TCD540080 model using a generic adapter. After running clear and delete everything and running guided setup I started this unit on a 23 hour recording session. Late that same evening the unit froze up. Today (Sunday the 21st) I plugged the unit back in and it resumed the recording. This evening it locked up again. I checked the system temp of the TCD2400 model at this time and found it to be 42C. So, I am thinking that the TCD540080 model is failing due to some component overheating. Is there any easy way to make this unit run cooler (the cover was removed and the unit was not sitting inside a cabinet when the unit locked up)?

Since the TCD240040 model had a temp of 42C I propped the unit up to improve airflow under it.
