Glee "Duets" (10-12-2010, Spoilers)
I was trying to figure out how Finn and Rachel were going to make a duet inappropriate... then I saw the performance. Yeah, that would pretty much do it. I was laughing so hard at that point, both at how completely WRONG that was, and the reactions from the rest of the club.
I also loved the conversation between Sam and Kurt... "Well Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor would protest. 'Make Em Laugh'? Singing In The Rain? 1952? Nothing? OK, maybe you ARE straight..." Perfect comedic timing there.
The actor who plays Mike Chang was hired not for his singing ability, but his dancing. So, there was some debate as to whether he could in fact sing. The show finally gives him a piece he has to solo on.... and it's a piece where he has to sing badly. Interesting. So... we have to continue wondering if he can sing or not.
Some pretty unfamiliar stuff for me tonight... Victor/Victoria, A Chorus Line, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. Even the Ike and Tina Turner song wasn't really all that familiar to me. The only two that I really recognized was the Elton John/Kiki Dee song "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and the Jason Mraz/Colbie Caillat song, "Lucky." Of the two, I prefered the latter, simply because the former has been so overused. It seems EVERYONE has done a version of that, and it's not exactly a tough song, so everyone does a perfectly adequate job of it.

"What is a Duet?"
"A Blanket"
Oh... I love thee, Brittany. Nudging the meatball with your nose. Too funny. Just bummed I didn't get to see Brittany do Brittany instead of Britney.

What was inappropriate about their song? I wasn't really paying attention. And why did they purposefully bomb it?

Interesting because I was thinking the opposite - finally some songs I knew and could sing along with!
It would have been fun to see Kurt and Sam do Gene Kelly and Donald O'connor's "Make them Laugh" duet. That would have been golden.

They sang the romantic song "With You I'm Born Again" (Billy Preston/Syreeta) while Finn was dressed as priest (wearing a black shirt and the white collar) and Rachel as (I assume) a catholic school girl.
They bombed it because Rachel wanted Sam to win, so he would feel like he belonged in the club, and so the rest of the team would believe in Sam.

Anyone know if there was a reason that the actor who plays Puck was written out of this (and possibly future) episodes?

Good question. I too wondered if I missed some sort of casting change

I loved this ep. Great music and entertaining performances. Only thing I would have changed would have been to have Artie and Brittany sing a duet.

I thought it was a decent, normal, Glee episode. No Sue this week though but I'll forgive them due to Santana/Brittany.
I didn't quite get the inappropriate song either. It was good to hear other people singing but I'd like to hear Will at some point also.
Mark Salling, who plays Puck, released an album today so it was an odd day to disappear.
Not a fan of the music from the next episode (two weeks time).

Loved it. Great music selections, good performances, and compelling stories for the characters.
And I think I like the Mercedes/Santana version of "Deep River" better than the original!

I think this was the best Brittany episode yet, material-wise. Almost everything that came out of her mouth or did was just classic. Loved when she picked up Artie and carried him to the bed and her comment about him now being on the football team and she'd "get to him eventually anyway."
Really great episode, I thought.. very solid music-wise.

I've been rough on the show this season, but this was a very good episode.
If you're new to "River Deep, Mountain High" and might seek out the Ike & Tina version, I might also humbly suggest you look for the cover by the (post-Diana Ross) Supremes and the Four Tops. It's fantastic.

I thought it was a pretty good episode. Didn't recognize most of the music except "Don't go breaking my heart." Chalk me up to the "Why was inappropriate?" group for Finn/Rachel.
Did like the Rachel/Kurt duet at the end.
Brittney/Santana - MMMMM! (IBIMB! )
Brittney - "We're going to do it before we duet." Perfect Brittney!
I wonder if they are going to follow-up on the Brittney/Artie relationship? I think she relealized she has more feelings for Artie than just another notch in her bed post.
I was also glad to see Kurt called out by both Finn and his Dad for his actions to Finn last year.
Speaking of losing the big V. Wonder if Rachel and Finn are going to find out that they both lied last year about losing their virginity?
Slight spoiler as it references next episode

Seriously? You guys don't see a problem with a priest singing a song to a catholic schoolgirl, one that takes the typically religious terminology "born again" and changes it to a romantic meaning?

The fact that Rachel wore black and white made her look more like a nun to me. I picture a catholic school girl in a plaid skirt and jacket with some color. Maybe that is why it didn't seem so bad to some people. Two adults singing a romantic song isn't bad. The only bad part is that the Catholic church frowns upon a Priest having a relationship with someone other than God.

Overall I enjoyed the episode. A few entertaining songs, decent story, good comedy and nice callback to previous stories. I got the feeling that the whole Kurt/Finn/Kurt's dad conversations were kind of a callout to comments on message boards to the same effect. Kind of like the stuff in the season premier. I almost fell off my chair at the Santana/Brittany scissoring comment. I wonder how many kids asked their parents what "scissoring" is. I also shed a tear watching Brittany push the meatball across the table with her nose while sitting alone at the table.

I did get it but not to the terribly shocking level I think I was supposed to it, it was still two kids, dressed up, singing a song, I feel it just missed the target.

I liked that Brittany voted for 'ME' in an anonymous ballot, and apparently Mr. Shue figured it out...
Even Artie voted for himself!

And Mercedes voted for herself and "Satan". At least that is who I am assuming wrote that vote. I don't think Santana would call herself that. Even though I am pretty sure she knows she is evil.

Brittany is my favorite character on Glee and wish she would have a more leading role in the future and that Rachel would get pushed to the background in more of a supporting role.

I've been wondering if Finn is still a virgin, or if Quinn gave it up when she was living at his house. I wouldn't think so, but in one episode she threatened to "cut him off" if he didn't do something.

I interpreted it as a nun. A nun in a miniskirt, but...

Finn is not. He lost it (last season) to Santana in a seedy motel.

Yeah, I took it as a nun and a priest as well. If Rachel wanted to go for the schoolgirl look, she needed to add some plaid in there.
Overall, another mixed bag musically. Loved the Mercedes/Santana duet, and I liked the first Rachel/Finn number as well as the Sam/Quinn number. But otherwise, meh. Although I did enjoy the Rachel/Kurt duet at the end.
Brittany kills me. Absolutely kills me.

I just figured that they needed an excuse to get Sam on the glee club, and being down a guy, at least temporarily, was a good one since they couldn't compete without getting another one.

Okay, I am not catholic, but I got the general idea - nun and priest doing something wrong - but I didn't get how it went with the song.

He can't, at least according to my wife's cousin, who went to junior high/high school with him. Apparently they all thought it was very funny when he was cast, because he can't sing a lick.

"Born Again" is a phrase used in the Christian community. It originates from the first part of John 3, when Nicodemus, a Pharisee, came to Jesus secretly to learn what it would take to be a follower of Jesus. John 3:3 states: "In reply Jesus declared, 'I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.'"
The song takes the phrase and changes it from a completely religious meaning to a romantic meaning, which wouldn't be as bad had it not been (in this instance) a priest singing it, who would be totally aware of the twisted reference there.
BTW: Rachel wasn't portraying a nun, she wasn't wearing a habit.

I'm still not convinced that Chord Overstreet's character (Sam Evans) is straight. It seemed to me that he deliberately went out of his way to convince everyone that he wasn't gay.
And seeing as how series co-creator Ryan Murphy is gay, it only stands to reason that he is leading up to something. Plus it would be nice if Kurt got a boyfriend; he is a tortured soul.
