RCN CableCARD on Comcast?

Hi Everyone, Im new to the forum and to Tivo. Just ordered a premiere on the 2 year contract. My question is... I have an M-Card from RCN when I used them about a year ago. Basically when they came out to pick up their equipment the guy told me to keep it cause it wasnt listed on my account and ive never been billed for it. Would I be able to use this card on comcast? I know it needs to be activated but would it work if i put it in and called up comcast to activate it?

Thanks

No, Comcast requires you to get a different CableCARD from them.

Is there a reason why or is it just typical comcast d**che baggery? From what i've gathered the M-cards are universal and should work on any provider.

Physically the cards are the same, but a CableCard is a "PC Card" that has code from the cable company that allows a set-top box (Tivo etc.) to display and record encrypted cable channels. The code to decrypt would be different on different cable systems (if not the type of encryption).

first, welcome to the forum, and second, fdisker is correct, we use cablecards specifically enabled for the region. For example, if you had a cablebox or cablecard from Comcast, and you go to another Comcast serving area, it wouldn't work either.

Which is exactly what is wrong with the cable industry. Hopefully Allvid will change this.

I have issues with RCN also. I recently purchased a TIVO Premiere and called RCN to inquire about getting an MCard. I was told that since I didn't get the TIVO box from RCN, they would not supply an MCard for the one that I purchased. I didn't know that legally they are required to supply one. They appear to be trying to force me to rent a TIVO Premiere from them for $20 a month and not purchase one on my own. I will call back tomorrow to see if I get the same answer.

I guess I'm optimistic and think that I just got a misinformed customer service representative the first time. I will give it another shot before considering your advice but thank you, Innocentfreak.

The problem is situations like this are exactly why the FCC added the category after their 10/14 meeting on the subject. The misinformed CSRs are always informed about the set top boxes, but rarely CableCARD. Ordering a CableCARD should be as easy if not easier.

The FCC wants to know of these incidents and examples.
