getting my tivo set up again....

Hi...im looking for some help (updated help if you will)

I have a uk tivo. Ive had it for years ( hanging out for the new virgin model) anyone know when its out??? anyway sidetracking....

my tivo seems to start crashing every 2 years or so and when it does i invariably forget how to get it all going again...i have an array of different discs one for the kernel upgrade, 1 for the cache card install etc etc and bits of paper lying around with what commands i need to put in to do what...etc etc.

I rebuilt it again last week and its just green screened again....heres my questions...

1. is there an uptodate disc which hold all of the tools i need to get mine running again (2x 400gb discs and a cachecard are installed
2. is there a new way of getting it all set up. A general summary of what i do is....fit original 40gb drive to pc and one of the 400gb models, copy original image (off of one cd), run the kernel upgrade (off of another), run the cache card install (another disc) then finally stretch the os over the other 400gb disc while doing this making sure testing in the tivo at every point. its the way ive done it over the years....

as i say - is there a new way of doing all of this with just one disc....and ive seen an advert on ebay where someone is flogging 1tb discs - i didnt think there were any ide 1tb discs available and if he is using sata discs is there an adaptor as i would love to get back to one disc...

I'd really appreciate some help as the tivo is the center of our house, its stood the test of time in the tv cabinet....

Thanks to anyone that starts to chip in...

You can fit a 1TB SATA drive using an adapter but you need to choose the drive and adapter carefully as not all models will work. A search of this forum should find some that others have fitted and are known to work.

For a DIY approach check out Hooch at www.tivoheaven.co.uk

You may be better just buying an off the shelf upgrade drive, that will be the easiest route. A couple of sites that come to mind are www.tivocentral.co.uk and www.tivoland.com but there are others.

ok - ive bought the hooch disc...ordered an sata converter.....whats the best sata drive to use, are there a number of them? ive noticed the samsung drives mention (1tb model) but, ive used them in pc's before and lost quite a few (was running a raid array - and i lost about 4 over the period of a year) for me western digital drives seem to be the most reliabel so if i could use a 1 or 2 tb version that would be great....can you recommend some...

I've upgraded to 1TB SATA in the past couple of months. There were a few issues that I eventually solved. Take a look at my summary thread:

If you have any questions I'll try and help if I can.
