Just cancelled TiVo, no attempt from them to save me...

I wasn't necessarily expecting some miraculous attempt from TiVo to keep me from cancelling, but I thought it odd that having been a subscriber since 2002with 3 active and 1 inactive boxes, that they didn't even try. There wasn't even an attempt to transfer to some sort of retention department, which I thought was the norm these days. Maybe it's because I told them about the DirecTV that I just recently got (love the Whole Home DVR, by the way) and that's what made the guy just cancel me then and there.

I already miss the TiVo interface, and the wife and kids don't like the new remote or interface either. Here's hoping for a new joint TiVo/DirecTV machine sooner rather than never...

If you ever cancel DirecTV prepare for an onslaught of calls. I'm up to six.

Tivo doesn't have any new product to sell you that will work with satellite TV. The existing S2s would work with satellite TV, but they won't record in HD and you need a second receiver with each TV to watch live TV while the S2 is recording.

Pretty much this. If you are switching to Directv not only would they have to convince you to keep your series 2 hardware active but also not leave your cable company.

If you were switching to the cable companies DVR, you might have found a different result.

We just don't bother to vent here, because the fan's vigorously defend TiVo. I called to cancel about a month ago and the person made me so angry I cursed (to myself) and hung up on him. He wouldn't take no for an answer.

The call started pleasant enough, I've been a long standing customer, but got Directv. He wanted me to keep my subscription and sell the Tivo's, but I insisted I wanted to end my commitment. I was at work, and after the 3rd round of his arguments i couldn't take it anymore.

I cancelled DirecTV after more than 10 years just a couple of months ago. Never received a call from them.

Is Tivo working for us or the TV channels?

I am sick to death of the fact that TIVO does not record finales or super finales. And, that their advertising links are slower than the rest of their recorded broadcasts.

Does anyone know why the finales and two hour episodes are erased first or not recorded when other older shows are saved?

They call me about every 3 days and I get mail everyday from DTV.

I usually talk to them to see what lies they will tell me that day so I can get a good laugh.

I cancelled last year after almost 12 years and the result was the same for me. It wouldn't have mattered, I had decided to try OTA with TiVo and internet options and spend less money. So far, I miss DirecTV but don't miss the monthly bill and won't resubscribe anytime soon. DirecTV was much better than cable for me so I will go back if I do decide on a pay TV service again. I had one HD TiVo until just recently, now I have two.

A two hour episode could cause a conflict with another program in the to-do list and if the other program is higher on the season pass manager then the two hour program would not be recorded. I suggest you look at your season pass manager and make sure you have the shows ordered properly.

Since 1999 I don't think I have ever experienced that. I'd look to some priority issue that kept your finale from being recorded.

Last time I canceled service, it was worse than breaking up with a girlfriend.

me: "hello, I'd like to disconnect my series 1 Tivo"

tivo girl: "oh no! why would you want to do that?"

me: "I just got two new THDs"

tivo girl: "but you and that series 1 have been together since 1999"

me: "Yeah, but it was time to upgrade"

tivo girl: "well, maybe you know someone who can still use it?"

me: "Nope, sorry"

tivo girl: "well okay, but should you change your mind, just call us back and reactivate"

She sounded so sad on the phone, I really felt bad about disconnecting that S1.

Usually whenever I talk to Tivo, the rep mentions how long I've been a customer. I'm surprised they didn't do this for the OP. Maybe I really am special!

You can easily buy a series 1 with lifetime service for $75 on ebay or amazon. It doesn't make economic sense to keep a series 1 with a monthly subscription

You mean $175? I've never seen a lifetime sub on any TiVo go for much less than $200.

Go look at completed ebay sales I think you will be surprised. $75 is too low but $175 is also becoming to high. Guess there just isn't much demand for Series 1 or 2 TiVos anymore.

I still wish they had released a version of their Series 3s or 4 that could control and record from an STB even if it were SD. Even better if they had made it so you could use Hauppauge's external HD PVR (or something similar from TiVo) with an existing Series 3 or 4 as an add on.

Thanks,

Wow! I'd set a search to find more for stacking CCTV DVRs but I don't need the power bill.

What could they have really done? They don't offer a product that suits your needs. Sure, it would have been nice for them to make the supposedly "coming soon" new DirecTiVo magically appear, but they can't do that.

Like I said, I wasn't exactly looking for them to offer me something to stay. I just found it odd that they made no attempt. I did not tell the CSR anything about me already having DirecTV installed at that point, I just more-or-less mentioned I was going that route. I just sort of expected them to try and talk me down from it. To be honest, even if TiVo would have said, "Hey Kevin, why don't you just stick with Time Warner analog cable and we'll let you have Lifetime on all 3 of your active units for $50 each...", I wouldn't have accepted. But you know, it's nice to be wanted!

The several times I have called Time Warner over the years to downgrade packages, threaten to cancel for one reason or another, and eventually cancel service, they tried their best to point out absolutely every single bad thing (in their estimations) about DirecTV service, mostly about the whole rain/snow fade issue. The last time I talked to TW, I spent about 35 minutes on that call alone, speaking to the first CSR, then someone in Retention, then their Supervisor. They were trying to do anything possible to keep me from going.

There are definite plusses and minuses for both my former TW set up with the 3 TiVos VS. DirecTV, but I am going to end up saving money in the end, and get many more channels in the process of doing so, the former being the key driver for me. I don't have anything bad at all to say about TiVo. It pained me to think about life without it, and just came down to primarily a matter of economics that I have weighed for months. It just seems like they were willing to part with me a whole lot quicker than I was willing to part with them, you know?

Maybe TiVo is happy with their current subscription numbers, or even happy to be rid of me. None of my boxes were 'lifetimed' or even on yearly contracts, I was going monthly on all of them, and have been the entire time I have had them. Maybe they weren't making enough money off me. Any and all of those reasons are ok, I just found my experience curious.
