Cool Tivo changing channels

We have a Tivo Series 4 with Comcast. My wife keeps the TV on as background noise. Tivo will pop up with a message to record some goofy show that it thinks we want and she does not see the message and can't figure out why it did what it did. I can see this if it is a show with a season pass but these are not shows that I want to record.

Is there anyway to restrict TV to recording only shows that I request?

thanks

Frank

Go into the "settings" and look for "TiVo Suggestions" and select off.

Which defeats one of the best features of the TiVo. But oh well.

meh..

The best feature of TiVo is setting it to record the shows YOU want. If I let TiVo record what it wanted, who knows what I might get. My TiVo might think I am gay.

Mine thinks that I'm a hermit programmer living with a herd of goats in a pineapple under the sea.

Meh!...

I'm not scared to see what TiVo thinks I might like to watch. If you actually take the time to use the 'Thumbs Up' and 'Thumbs Down' mechanism properly, it does actually learn what it is you like to watch. I've found some real treasures in the suggestions list that I would have completely missed otherwise.

Your TiVo probably thinks you're a person with no opinions.

The suggestions is a gimmick - not for serious tv watchers.

I actually like the feature and have loved it for years. As long as your consistent in rating shows, it can get very accurate. I've discovered many shows that I didn't know existed. Which is awesome because I probably don't watch enough tv.

The major problem comes when you have multiple people with different preferences. Thanks to my 5 year old, almost all the TV suggestions are now Seasame Street and occasionally Nova.

It shouldn't switch away the primary tuner though. It should only record suggestions when both tuners are free (one Live TV and the other idle) and it can use the "other" one

No, that is just the definition of *ANY* DVR. One of the [few remaining] things that is different and special about the TiVo is rating programs and allowing it to fill your unused space with possibly useful stuff.

Total nonsense. If you rate programs properly, then TiVo will eventually capture at least SOME useful stuff. I can't tell you how many new things TiVo for me over the years that I would not have otherwise found if suggestions were turned off.

??? How does the TiVo *KNOW* you are watching "live" TV? It doesn't. It doesn't have eyes to watch you sitting there. That is why it will ASK you if it is OK to switch to a different channel. Just answer "no".

Now, could they add a nice option that would set something like "Record suggestions only if 2 idle tuners?" Sure, I am in favor of that OPTION. But it really is no big deal. It is only ever going to try and record something on the half or whole hour anyway, which is either zero or 1 interruption... MAX. Since you are watching "live" TV, you are probably being interrupted by annoying commercials every 10 minutes anyway, right?

But I can't even remember the last time I watched "live" TV....
