Are you using iTunes on a Mac? TiVo can read MP3s, but not AICC — the latter being the iTunes default format on a Mac. (AICC sound quality is a bit better than MP3.)

Actually, iTunes can understand several other formats that TiVo can not read.

You can Export AICC (or any other iTunes format) as an MP3 (which TiVo can then read).

You're right about the AV cable... if you can see or hear something on your Nano, you'll be able to see or hear it on your TV (bypassing your TiVo).

Have fun!

Hmm... go into iTunes, select a typical song, and “Get Info.” (Probably control-i or a pulldown menu selection under the “File” menu.)

Let us know what it says under “Kind” in the alert box that pops up.

A folder is a folder... TiVo will always show a folder, even if there's nothing within it that it knows how to play (and thus won't shoe).

O.K. ... All Apple products (iTunes, iPods, etc.) can Play AAC music, but TiVo can not. Tivo wants to see MP3s. Similar, but apples and oranges to the hardware.

So, what you have to do is convert your AACs to MP3s... and here, iTunes on a Mac is different enough from iTunes on a PC that I'm not comfortable suggesting how. But if you do a Google search for ”convert aac to mp3 pc“ you'll find a bunch of options.

Just make sure you save your AAC originals... don't replace them with the converted MP3 files. You'll still want to use AACs on your iPod — they sound better.

(One more reason to use that AV cord and your iPod to listen to your music on good speakers, rather than as MP3s via your TiVo.)

One more option... if you have a DVD recorder in your PC, and a DVD player as part of your sound system, you can use iTunes to burn a DVD (in almost any format) and then play it back over your music system's DVD player. Or, just run a long audio cable down the hall from your computer to an AUX IN jack on your amplifier. (There are little transmitters/receivers that can do this wirelessly.)

Should your home be wired for Wi-Fi, there are a whole bunch of additional options.

Have fun!

One more aside... iTunes and iPods CAN play MP3s (as well as AACs). Podcasts are MP3s — if you download podcasts from the iTunes store (or anywhere else) your TiVo can see and play them with no further steps.

AC3 is an alternative audio codec as well. I'm not sure about i* compatibility however, but I would think it's supported as well, since a lot if not all TiVo podcasts are encoded using it.
