Purchasing a used HDVR2 Tivo unit

I am looking at purchasing a used Hdvr2 Tivo unit from Ebay. I still own all my receivers but 1 and I don't want to pay any more lease fees. I call Dtv to check on the receiver I thinking about purchasing to make sure I can activate it. The Tivo unit do not have a Rid # only a DVR service number. Dtv told me I will not be able to activate any Tivo unit without the old access card number. Has anyone heard this before and is there any way around this.

Ignoring the access card number issue, you won't be able to activate any additional Receivers or DVRs without paying the $5/mo fee. It's called a "mirroring fee" when you own the equipment rather than a "lease fee", but it's the same amount of money.

I have an older account (old primestar account) where I only have a one time mirroring charge for as many receivers I have activated. I currently have 6 receivers activated and pay only a one $5.00 mirroring charge for 5 of the receivers and the 6th receiver is an R-16 Dvr leased receiver. 2 of the older receivers only pick up a signal only about 1/2 of the time so I am going to swap one of these out. I don't believe my account will change. But I have been wrong numerous times before.
