TiVo and Unbox - do I still need cable?
I know there was a post on this back in 2008, but I'm curious whether people are actually doing this.
I am thinking about canceling my cable TV service (Time Warner Cable NYC, which costs a fortune and has terrible customer service) and just using my TiVo with Amazon VOD. I'd continue to pay TiVo for the privilege of using my TiVo to download Amazon content, but I'd no longer be getting a cable signal. I have a Series 2 with ethernet, so it could get its (irrelevant) cable guide data that way.
Does anyone know whether this would work? Has anyone tried this? If so does it work properly or did you run into any problems?
Thanks,
Karen

I guess that would work but other ways would be better and more cost effective. For example get a Roku box at $80 (SD) or $100 (HD), and pay no TiVo service fees. You can get Amazon and Netflix plus other internet videos. Check out their web site.

I've been using Netflix w/ OTA only on my Series 3 Tivos for several months now. No problems at all. Just hook up an antenna to your Tivo and re-run guided setup to tell it you have antenna only. From a price standpoint, it's hard to beat.
By the way, hopefully your internet doesn't come from Time Warner Cable also, or you might find them jacking up the price of internet when you drop cable.

This should be easy enough to try. Unfortunately some antennas are junk. I have the silver sensor, which works well, but I haven't followed recent developments. Maybe there are antennas that work better. The topic is discussed a lot on AVS Forum. I hesitated in posting that link, there are 11000 posts in that thread alone. You might be better off buying an antenna locally (with return privileges) and trying it for yourself.
Even if you only get half of the possible OTA channels with a cheap antenna, at least it's better than nothing.

OTA is great for Series 3 but kemcards has a Series 2.

OTA still works for a Series 2, except for the 2DT (649) and the 542. You just have to hook it up to a CECB.

Thanks everyone! That's a good point about the Roku box. I'll have to look into that. I don't think I'll really try to watch OTA - almost everything I like to watch seems to be available on Amazon and/or Netflix these days.
TWC may well jack up the cost of the internet, although I also have phone with them so they'll still be making some $ off me. And if they give me trouble I have other options for internet (but they have a monopoly on the cable).

Another option to consider is the Playon Media Software. It runs on a PC and will stream Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, CBS, and other internet content to a frontend device.

I think it really depends if you're into live sports or not.
