It’s the end of an era. After 16 years on the job, Law & Order’s S. Epatha Merkerson is turning in the badge she wore as BS-free Lt. Van Buren at the end of the season.

Sorry to see her go. I've always liked her character.
Also, thanks for naming the thread title apropriately and leaving the spoiler info out of the title for those who don't want to know.

I will miss her. I don't really watch L&O much anymore, but to me the best cast was the late 90's with Sam Waterston, Ms. Merkerson, Jerry Orbach, Jesse L. Martin, and one of the many attractive female co-ADAs.

What's interesting is that apparently the whole cancer thing wasn't intended to write the character out, since the decision to leave was hers and only recently made, after the cancer plot had been ongoing for quite some time...

The first attractive female co-ADA, Jill Hennessey was the best.

They did a good job with her there. She looked like heck in Crossing Jordan.
FWIW, I think SVU has consistently had better looking ADAs...

Sam Waterston needs to retire about 5 years ago. When they gave his character a promotion I stopped watching.

Is there even going to be a next season of Law & Order?
It's ratings have been in the toilet for the past month.

Actually that wasn't Hennessy. That was the blonde chick. Hennessey was killed in a car accident (Jack was driving).

Oh, and I should add that I still LOVE this show and would hate to see it go! I’ve been watching it from Day 1, and while it is stale at times, it is still a great alternative to most of the crap out there in TV land. And I <heart> Jeremy Sisto.
I’ve given up on SVU and CI (although I did love CI at the beginning).

Are you sure? I thought she was giving Jerry Orbach, who had fallen off the wagon, a ride home when they got t-boned.

Now that you mention it, maybe that is what happened. But she was killed in a car accident...
Edited to add: Yup, you're right. Lenny had fallen off the wagon, and she was taking him home. For some reason, I thought Jack was involved, I guess because he and Claire were lovers.

I LOVED Law and Order in the Lennie Briscoe days. I still miss Jerry Orbach. But I've never managed to work up an interest in it since he died.
But I do love S. Epatha. She was great in that role.

Ding ding..he sucks as the DA.
I gave up my addiction to Law and Order after he was promoted and the new crappy cops came into town.
I'm sad that she is leaving though. The days of her and Lenny getting into it...

Is the latter referring to Alana De La Garza? I have no idea who you mean.

Jamie and Abbie were the best ADA IMHO.
Abbie for her ruthlessness and Jamie for always checking Jack....

Merkerson and Waterson are past their prime. Waterson looks like he hs parkinsons disease. Merkerson looks like she would give herself two black eyes if she ever had to chase a suspect.
Sisto and Anderson don't come close to Orbach, Noth, Martin or Bratt. In the past, one of the detectives was the Sr. and one the Jr. and there was mutual respect. These guys look like they would stab each other in the back for a promotion.
Roache and De La Garza are carrying the show this season. I think Roache has improved this season.

I agree. The characters play off each other well. One is eager to prosecute no matter what and the other often has moral reservations. And of course Jack's role is to mediate.
Except for SVU, I usually only pay attention to bits and pieces of the detective half of the show. The courtroom/legal half has more compelling writing and better actors.
