Transfer from Inactive Tivo
I used the Tivo upgrade program to upgrade my S2 to Premiere. During the checkout process, I was notified that my S2 would stay active for 60 days:
No thanks.
TiVo will keep your current DVR active for 60 days at no charge to ensure you have enough time to get your new Premiere set up. After 60 days, it will automatically become inactive.
When I check my Tivo account now, it shows my Premiere as active and my S2 as inactive. Can I still transfer shows from the S2 to the new Premiere?
Thanks

this isnt right yer OLD tivo is supposed to retain its Full subscription (if it had lifetime on it....) If it was monthly that may be different I guess.

ThAbtO, Do you know that for sure or is that an educated guess?
It seems like the whole point of them saying that it will remain active for 60 days is so that you could use that time to transfer recordings that you want to keep. That and it gives you time to still use the old box while you wait for your cable company to actually get the cable card right on the new one.

As per talking to corporate a week ago the "Upgrade" is supposed to remain ACTIVE on your OLD unit (that qualifies you) is supposed to keep its Lifetime (If you have lifetime on it) I dont know about If you had monthly on it.

My understanding was the same as chabuchie. I wanted the S2 to stay active so that I could transfer shows to the Premiere. I haven't tried yet, as I haven't received my Premiere yet, but I noticed the inactive status on the Tivo website under my account.

TivoGuy33, have you checked to see if your S2 is still showing up on the "Find TV Shows" page? I chose not to continue service on one of my S2's and it is still showing up on the tivo site. If you can't access your S2 on there, I'd call customer service because it looks like something's not working right.

Thanks chabuchie. I tried to use the Tivo website Find TV Shows page, but I got this message:
We're sorry, we cannot find a TV lineup for a TiVo DVR in your account. You can continue to browse the Find TV shows section of tivo.com but you won't be able to record shows from the Web.
I guess I will be calling customer support.
Thanks for your help.

I noted that my TiVos names were no longer associated with the correct DVR after my Upgrades. Is it possible your Series2's name is now associated with the Premiere's TSN, and that's why there's no lineup because Guided Setup hasn't been run yet?

That's what happened with my two units that were on monthly. The Premiere units took the names the two units have. And when I check the system info on the TiVo HD units it shows the account status as "0: unknown"
And it also says to name the DVR on TiVo.com. But the two units are no longer in my DVR list.
I can still see all my TiVos on my network and transfer recordings from them. And the TiVoHD is still showing up in the NPL with the name it had and I can transfer shows from it.
I don't know what will happen when I connect the Premiere. Since the Premier will have that name.

Sorry to join the conversation late, but are you guys saying that if I have a series 2 with lifetime & upgrade to a S4 premiere, my S2 will still work with lifetime? That is amazing if thats the case!

That's exactly how this Premiere Upgrade Program works.
Edit: it is different with non-PLS plans. Those are transferred, with the option to add service to the old DVR.

I talked with someone in customer service yesterday, and he told me that the web site will show the old Tivos as inactive, but they will still work for 60 days. I got my Premiere yesterday, and I was able to transfer shows from the S2. So all worked out fine.
Thanks

What do you need (technically speaking, in terms of hardware), to transfer recordings from the old to the new?

The Tivos need to be connected to the same network sub net, have active subscriptions, be on the same account, and have transfers enabled on your account. You can not transfer copy protected content, or HD content to a non HD Tivo.
Once they are setup, go to the now playing list, and at the bottom you should see the other Tivo.

I definitely have everything except, maybe, the bolded one. I have my current TiVo on a wireless network connection, but to have both on the same wireless network, I'd need a second wireless network adapter on TiVo #2, right?
Or I could probably just make a wireful connection between my router and my old TiVo with an Ethernet cable, right?

To be connected to the same network simply means connected to the same router with the computers and other Tivos in order to transfer between them, wired or wireless does not make much of a difference. Some connect with both wired and wireless.

Cool, I figured as much, but just wanted to be sure in advance. Once the old TiVo's programs are all transferred, I'll no longer be using it, so I just need a temporary solution.

Typically, same network = same default gateway + same subnet mask.

Thanks everyone, I've got transfers working properly from the Series 3 to the Premiere now... except a bunch of shows have some sort of idiotic copy protection. It won't even let me transfer something from one TiVo to another?
I'm guessing there's no possible workaround, not even a notarized letter promising (truthfully!) that I'm only keeping the old copy around long enough to transfer before I restore the old TiVo to factory defaults?
