Hard drive, tuner, or ??? going out?

Long time lurker first time poster having an issue with my Samsung SIR-S4040. This unit is my original unit and is around 5 or 6 years old. Last night I started having problems with the unit becoming "jerky". The sound and picture will freeze for about 3-4 seconds and then catch back up. There is no rhyme or reason as to when it does this. It will sometimes go 15 minutes between these freezes and then there are time when it does it every 45 seconds or so. I have tried this on both tuners but it seems like one tuner is worse than the other but that comes from just a short time of observation.

I have check other threads and have already unplugged the unit and rebooted it. I have checked all cables and they are firm and tight. I have an SIR-s4080 in the bedroom that I hacked with zipper and instacake about 4 years ago and it is operating just fine so I know its not the signal coming into the house.

A few other things. If I am in the guide area when one of these freezes occur, it will throw me back to the channel previously selected and the guide goes off. Also last week I started getting a Please activate your DVR Service message. The first time it happened, I called DTV to find out wth and the CSR typed away and then said she was resending the signal to me and then she had me check to see if it would record and it did. A few days later, I got the same msg but I checked the record function and all seemed to be normal and our season pass recordings have been recording as they should so I did not call, and just yesterday I got the same msg. Just wondering it this is a coincidence or related?

What does the Tivocommunity brain trust think?

It sounds as if the hard drive is starting to flake on you. I would suggest calling Samsung Tech Support for information on how you can perform a Kick Start 54 to run a test on the hard drive. I wouldn't suggest calling TiVo Tech Support because this machine was made by Samsung and their Tech Support Department would have more specific information on your unit.

Hope this helps. . . .

Thanks for the quick reply, but what I think I was seeing was the agonal breathing of the machine. I believe that it has now succumbed to its disease. I retrieved the old 80 gig HD that I took out of the SIR 4080 and stored it 4 years ago because when I hacked it, I bought a new larger HD for it and kept the old smaller one for just in case measures. I opened up the sick machine and commenced to doing a heart transplant and put the 80 in place of the 40 and plugged it back in and nothing. The HD will not spin up. I then plugged the 40 back in and still no hd. If I keep the ribbon cable off the HD then it will spin up but what good is that and that is true with both HD's. I then thought wth, I will see what happens if I replace the ribbon cable ( I was once and IT guy so I have many of these little buggers laying in a box) but it still didn't change anything. So here I am with a box that has now flat lined I guess.
