Is a tuning adaptor required?

Is a tuning adaptor required if an M card is used?

If your cable company requires a tuner adapter now, it'll still require one with the premiere, no matter which kind of cablecard is used.

As long as your cable company is sending channels out in SDV, you'll need the tuning adapter.

While it would have increased hardware costs, I'm not sure there's a reason they couldn't have included the tuning adapter inside the box... It is just a DOCSIS modem with some special firmware...

Because every cable head end is different. There are several different manufacturers of head end equipment, and the customer side equipment has to match. I'm not aware of any manufacturer's tuning adapter that works on a competitors system, they are all proprietary. Someday, if Tru-2-Way ever comes to be, the required firmware for each cable company could be downloaded. But we are a long way from that being universally implemented. Its the same reason why the cable card is not built in, you need one that matches what your local cable company uses.

My provider is a a "traditional cable company" and they have no plans for SDV as far as I'm aware.

In fact most people won't see SDV at all. It's already been proven to be a disaster.

just wait till more broadband heavy stuff starts becoming popular, especially when channels start delivering 3D. traditional cable companies dont have the infrastructure for it. didnt you hear, 3D is the next big thing
