expansion drive choice for Series 3 HD

can i use a Seagate 1.5TB FreeAgent XTreme External Hard Drive for an expansin drive? i have one that i don't need on my computer that i have just taken off my computer system.

it is supposed to be able to connect with eSata, usb, or firewire. i would use the eSata connection. do i need another cable? it only has a USB cable i think.

this TiVo only has the original internal drive. i have had it for about three years so it is out of warranty.

thanks,

Carl

It doesn't address that *specific* drive, but it is a wealth of good solid information, and that includes usable sizes, since you will not be able to use all of your capacity. The 1.5TB drives are a higher capacity then the S3 and TivoHD can handle, in an internal situation you have to throw away the excess capacity.

Addressing every single drive that works on an S3 would not be feasible, addressing which drives do not is the approach taken. It also addresses your question on the cable to use.

That's the best thread to post your questions on regarding expansion.

The FAQ also notes that >1.1TB drives are not "plug and play" compatible with any TiVo.

Knock on wood, I"ve been using one of these:

for going on 2 years without any problems.

It's important that the external drive (you choose) have a mechanical on/off switch, and that you a quality eSata cable is used.
