pytivo help

Ok, I need to use pytivo to transfer closed captions back to my TiVo-- this seems ridiculous but is apparently true. Pytivo is incredibly complicated to install and use. I may have installed it, but I have no idea how to configure or use it. What's a share? Can anyone point me to a relatively user friendly guide? thanks, and why can't TiVo to go just transfer the captions back? it's really easy to use

A share is where your videos are stored.

You can set up and use PyTivo with your browser at http:// localhost:9032

No it isn't.

It's a bug on the TiVo side, in recent versions of the software, that captions in program streams are ignored.

Actually, you should be able to pull intact transport-stream .TiVo files back to a Roamio or Premiere using TiVo Desktop.* It's only if you'd decrypted them that you'd need pyTivo to do it. TD predates these models, and was never updated to be able to send transport streams, except in .TiVo files.

* Please note the correct name of the program. It is not "TiVo to go". That's the name of the service. Why do so many people call TiVo Desktop "TiVo to go"? I don't get it.

pyTivo is extremely easy to configure. Yes you can configure via web browser if you want by using url below after starting pyTivo:
localhost:9032

But all you really need is a very simple pyTivo.conf file in the pyTivo installation folder that looks like this:
(Obviously fix the ffmpeg and video paths)

pyTivo.conf
Code:
[Server]
ffmpeg = c:\path\to\ffmpeg.exe
debug = True
ts = True

[videos]
type = video
path = c:\path\to\where\your\videos\are
force_alpha = True
If you don't already have ffmpeg installed somewhere you can download a windows binary from here:
http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/win...in32-static.7z

P.S. If you are going to try and transfer back .TiVo files that are not using TS container then you will also need to add your 10 dgit MAK and tivodecode path to your setup right below the ffmpeg entry in [Server] section:
Code:
tivo_mak = 0123456789
tivodecode = c:\path\to\tivodecode.exe

I really appreciate your help. I do apparently have pytivo at least partially correctly installed because my tivos see it and can transfer movies back using it. (Pytivo doesn't see the tivos, but I don't really want to use it that way, so no problem.) But, the transfer back does not have the captions. I honestly have no idea how to edit a .conf file, so I thought I would use the web configuration tool, but it's not clear to me how to use it to obtain the configuration you reference above-- do I edit global, hd, sd or mymovies settings, or all of the above, and how do it do it-- there are so many choices. I tried setting the TS setting to true, but it said that was the default setting anyway. At any rate setting it at true did not transfer the captions. Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

To add "ts=on" setting via web page it's not obvious, but do as follows:
With web browser connect to localhost:9032
Settings-Global Server Settings
Add Setting
Setting Name=ts
Setting Value=on
Save Changes

(Make sure you also set ffmpeg and tivodecode appropriately in the web page settings).

1. Fire up a text editor and load the file.
2. Type in the changes.
3. Save the file.

If you are using Windows, EditPlus is a good text editor, but there are probably 1000 others.
