Stuck at "Almost There..." but it's not the hard drive

So I've recently been having problems with my TiVo not coming out of standby and therefore, not recording anything (we put it in standby every night before going to bed). Naturally, I would unplug and replug the TiVo in and sometimes it would boot right up and other times it would get stuck at the Almost There screen. Yesterday I couldn't get it past the Almost There screen no matter how many times I unplugged and plugged it back in. I figured the hard drive (Seagate 500GB DB35.3) must be going bad so I pulled the drive and ran the SeaTools diagnostics bootup disk and low and behold, the disk passed the long test. So, it's not the hard drive.

Next, I tested the CMOS battery (original to my nearly 8-year old Series2) figuring it must be bad after all these years but it too is still going strong.

So now I'm at the end of my rope. The fan is running so it can't be that. Any other ideas?

A couple of other symptoms...I've noticed that the TiVo will not come out of standby frequently when the temperature in our house drops to around 64 degrees or so (we drop the temp when we're at work all day). And, the other night, we were watching something that we had recorded and the unit turned off right in the middle of our episode (the screen just went to black but the unit was still running).

Any help or insight that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Just because the drive passes manufacturer's dianostics doesn't mean it's not borked. The drive may be fine but the image/'boot sector might be hosed. You might try some Kickstart diagnostics to further troubleshoot.

The figure I've heard is that 10-20% of all problematic disks pass their manufacturer's diagnostics. So don't be completely certain.

Can I run kickstart codes on an old TCD140060?

I'm really starting to think it might be the power supply. I hear high-pitched noises coming from the side of the unit that the power supply sits on.

Could very well be the power supply. I can't imagine that pulling the plug every night does it any good either. That's an open invitation to corrupting something on the drive. TiVos are designed for continuous operation.

I don't pull the plug every night. We put it in "Standby" mode.

Sorry. Not sure how I read that into it. Anyway, I still vote for the power supply.

So a new power supply from Weaknees has apparently fixed my issue. Thanks Weaknees!
