Selling HR-21 on Ebay

BACKGROUND: I canceled DirecTV several months ago, was billed for an early termination fee, fought the fee on the grounds that the CSR told me I wasn't under contract and that no ETF would be assessed, battled long and hard with DTV over the fee, finally won and they agreed to waive the fee. DirecTV has never asked for the box back and, in fact, the CSR said that I owned all of my equipment.

So now I have an unused HR21 in my attic that I would like to sell on Ebay. Based on what the CSR said, I should be able to sell it free-and-clear on Ebay. But after my experience with the ETF, I don't want to assume that DirecTV won't try something sneaky should I sell it--like claiming that money is owed on the account before they will activate. How can I check the status of this box and determine if it can be sold and activated by another customer without penalty?

You can call DirecTV, give them the serial number and Receiver ID of the box, and ask. Prepare to be told that it is leased.

ETF does not equate to owning the reciever, would get it in writing that the reciever is owned and not leased. Call into Directv, give them the recivier id and ask if it is marked owned or leased. If the unit is flagged as leased directv will not activate it for the buyer.

I realize that ETF doesn't equate with ownership, but I was relying on the statement the CSR made that I owned all equipment. Nevertheless, I assume DirecTV will try to claim the receiver as their own despite the CSR's representations and I am really not up for another battle. I have now decided to pull the SATA drive and put it in my computer as a secondary data drive rather than hassle with DirecTV. Sometimes it is better to let sleeping dogs lie....

Is there a market for the remote, slim-line dish, B-Band Converters or other non-traceable components in the HR-21 besides the drive which, by the way, I have already reformatted and installed in my computer

The dish there is a market for. BBCs, I'd think not, as DirecTV hands those out like candy. The remote might be salable.

This. Just call pretending you are considering buying at and ask.

We all know that advice from CSRs is not gospel.

I bet the CSR saw your HR10s on the account and assumed that the HR21 was also owned.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

And none the less Directv had one of my auctions pulled because I listed it with the BBC connector. Claimed it was intellectual property or some sort of **** like that.

I would be carefull about taking the thing apart as you may get a letter in the mail demanding your leased receiver back or face the 500 dollar fee. ( or whatever they charge)
