Changing channels toooooo slow.
When I change channels, the screen goes black for up to 3 seconds.
It actually looks like the TV is off.
I have a Sony HD TV which is about 6 months old, Comcast, and a TIVO HD XL.
I'm not sure when this started but it has gotten much worse in the past few months.
I have reset the TIVO and recently got a new card from Comcast.
Neither of these things helped. TIVO offered to replace my unit but they won't transfer the data onto a new unit. That's not my idea of good customer service especially since they told me people constantly complain about that.
Any ideas how to deal with this?
Is it a TIVO or Comcast problem?

Is your TiVo set to fixed 1080i or fixed 720p output under Settings -> Video -> Video Output format?
If you have the TiVo to set to native or hybrid output, you'll get a black screen when you switch channels and menus with different resolutions. Using a fixed setting eliminates that.
For more common Q&A and tips, be sure to see the Using TiVo section of the TivoHD Overview, Q&A, Setup, Tips sticky.

I changed it to fixed and still have the same problem.
Nothing has changed.
Any other things for me to try?
I'm open to any suggestions.

Is this your first digital box? Digital channel tuning isn't instant as was the case with analog. A tuning delay of ~1.5 seconds is normal with digital because the channel has to be decoded (uncompressed) on the fly for display.
There may be an additional delay when switching between analog (channels <80 on some cable systems) and digital channels.
It is also possible that there is some sort of HDMI interoperability issue that is causing an added channel sync delay. I know some older Sony TVs from 2004-2006 exhibited this problem; in some cases, a firmware fix was available from Sony. To rule that out, you can connect the TiVo with component to compare.

Would there be added delay for tuning adapter channel resolution? From the time I hit the remote key(s) for a channel change to when the video actually shows up is typically 5 seconds. (Time Warner, Tuning Adapter, HDMI, 780p fixed resolution TiVo output). Maybe I should be requesting a new TiVo?

Yes, there is an added delay for SDV.
Swapping TiVos will not make a difference. In fact, no operations vary between TiVos in the same setup/configuration. Channel changing times vary between analog and digital channels, as well as between non-SDV and SDV digital channels.

Forgive me for this stupid question but what is SDV?
Standard...?
I assume that a digital channel and an HD channel are not the same.
Is that correct?

SDV - Switched Digital Video
Everything is digital now, but an HD channel has to do with the viewing resolution, 480/720/1080.

Switched Digital Video explained: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...72#post5294772
It's a trick that more and more cable cos are using to squeeze more digital channels into a limited bandwidth. In addition to cable cards (required by TiVo's for any digital cable service) you need a Tuning Adapter (TA) box to receive SDV channels.
Digital channels can be either SD or HD. I believe it's correct to say that all HD cable channels are digital.

When you say you "reset" the Tivo, did you do the reset from the menu or did you unplug the unit? Many times unplugging for 15-30 sec. will clear up problems that the menu-based reset won't.

I have unplugged the unit countless times.
I just got off the phone with Comcast and the dude I was talking to doesn't know what a tuning adaptor is. Neither do I. The picture looks like one of those cheap converter boxes that Comcast was giving out for free.
I have a single M card in my TIVO HD XL.
Are you all saying that is not enough?

Just depends on whether ComCast is using SDV in your service area. If you post your location perhaps an OP in the same area will post whether they use SDV.
You should be able to just ask ComCast but.... maybe not. Their web site probably will say something about it if they're using it.
If you are missing a lot of channels from your lineup, that's another clue they are using SDV.
If you need a TA and they haven't told you, that is ridiculous --- but believable.
