So You Think You Can Dance "Top 6 Couples Results" 7/9/09 *spoilers*
Top 10 is revealed tonight.
Local channel showing in 4:3..
Group number by Tabitha and Napoleon. I rather enjoyed that group number.
Cat is looking fine once again in blue.
Today is Nigel's 60th bday.
They wanted to do a Michael Jackson special but Sony or the family said no go.
Results time.
Caitlin and Jason are in the bottom 3.
Janette and Brandon are safe.
Randi and Evan are safe.
Jeanine and Phillip are in the bottom 3.
Judges know in the morning the results. They usually have their minds made up who they think should stay but they do take the dance for your lives into account. Who ever is dropped will probably be a "swing" dancer.
Melissa and Ade are in the bottom 3.....
Kayla and Kūpono are safe.
Behind the scenes of Season 6.
Solo time.
Caitlin - A bit of a vanilla solo with exception to that one flip.
Jason - A decent solo for Jason.
Jeanine - Hmm another kind of vanilla solo for the girls.
Phillip - A good popping solo by Phillip.
Melissa - A nice performance.
Ade - Interesting music, I thought my PC was having issues at first! A pretty strong solo.
I think Caitlin is leaving after that, and its a tossup between Jason and Phillip.
Performance by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland.
Melissa is safe.
Jeanine is safe.
Caitlin is leaving.
Jason is safe.
Ade is safe.
Phillip is going home.
Nigel worked it out with the producers so Caitlin and Philip will be on the tour.

Ade had the solo of his life. Very unexpected as he is pretty low key but he was really aggressive.
I'm glad Phillip and Caitlin get to be on tour. Phillip is crazy good at what he does and Caitlin has flexibility up the wazoo! The six-packs on her and Melissa make me hang my head in shame.

On the solo performances, I thought the girl who did the best job was the one who got eliminated.
Also, I thought that going away speech Phillip gave was a great speech, and I could tell some people were moved by it, and when they showed Nigel's reaction and his head nodding, I could tell that he approved of that speech as well.
On another note, when the show opened up Cat made a comment about how close all the dancers were, how great they all were, and how none of them stand out. I totally disagree with that. Janette and Brandon stand out bigtime in my mind as the best dancers, and I don't think the others are even that close to them in quality. I've thought so for at least a few weeks now.

Oh, and that guest musical act (the singer who's voice went everywhere and the 4 dancers in the background) was high quality imo. Better than just about any of the guest acts I ever see on American Idol. I wish I could remember who that group was.

They need Caitlin for the Bollywood number on tour. I thought it was interesting that Nigel let on that the judges already have their decisions made usually before the solos, and I think that they're hoping the publicity of mentioning it will help them secure the MJ songs.

My 20 yr. old daughter reports that she was in Destiny's Child with Beyonce. We too were impressed by her live performance. Her name is Kelly Rowland.

It's interesting to try and rank the solos -- for the most part, I don't like the solos on the show because the 30 seconds seems way too short. This is partly because of the music selections, I think -- pick any 30-second segment of a song with lyrics, especially a slow ballad, and you just aren't going to have that much of the song-story to play with.
Thus I liked Jeanette's* solo last week (the one to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata) because it avoids that whole song-fragment problem by using an instrumental, and she was thoughtful about what 30 seconds she chose.
This week, I thought Melissa (the ballerina) made an interesting choice by going with Kodo (the Japanese drumming group) rather than a classical piece. She also changed up her look, rather than going for a standard 'ballerina' sort of costume.
While I didn't like Jeanette's* solo this week as much as last week (this week had some of the same moves, so it felt like the same moves as last week but with different music and clothes), I thought in general her lines were stronger and had more impact than what Caitlin did.
So for me, Caitlin's solo ended up on the bottom.
Tastes differ -- and isn't it fascinating?

No disagreement here -- Brandon and Janette have been blowing the roof off the joint compared to everybody else. It will be very, very interesting to see what happens next week, as they mix things up and get new partners.
Watch out for Jeanine, though.
Edited to add correction:
* Oops -- I meant Jeanine Mason

Agreed, I like Phillip's style a lot but lets face it, he was holding Jeanine back.

Murgatroyd ... you mean Janine, not Jeanette. Jeanette has never been in the B3 (and rightfully so).

murgatroyd didn't say Jeanette, but spelled Jeanine Jeanine, not Janine. Jeanine is the correct spelling. And it's Janette, not Jeanette.

I've been screwing up the spelling of the two J girls all season long. I know them apart when I see them, but my fingers keep getting confused. The problem is that I've also seen other girls use the spelling 'Janine' and so I have to make an effort to put the e in there: J eanine -- and then my fingers start wanting to put an extra e into Janette's name, too, where it doesn't belong.
Anyway, to clarify:
Jeanine Mason was Phillip's partner and did the Moonlight Sonata solo. So the post where I was talking about solos, whatever I typed up there, I should have said "Jeanine".
Janette Manrara was Brandon's partner and is the salsa dancer.
When I was talking about Janette and Brandon being the best dancers on the show, but added at the end of my post "Watch out for Jeanine, though." -- I did mean Jeanine Mason, because I think she has done good work in her numbers with Phillip. I'm saying keep your eye on all three of these dancers.
I like both J girls, and am very curious about what's going to happen when they switch up the partnering.
Apologies for the confusion -- I shouldn't have dissed either of my J girls by getting their names wrong, and I should have been more clear in my other post that I was talking about three dancers, not two.
Jan

I already resigned myself to the fate of drowning in the sea of J's, and there is no hope to save me from this.

Really? I was trying to decide if it was the worst one they've had so far. The singing sounded terrible to me, and I couldn't figure out why the DJ guy got any credit, because it sure didn't seem like he did anything at all. If it wasn't for the fast forward buttons I'd have been looking for a drill to run through my ears.

Missed that it was Kodo. I managed to catch them in January, very impressive show. Worth going out of one's way to try to catch if you get the chance.

I gotcha. It was right in the bottom part of the post I was reading, and wrong in the top part of the post that you were reading. Anyway, we got a clarification from murgatroyd.

My fingers keep wanting to type 'Jeanette' instead of 'Janette' because of Jeanette MacDonald.

I would not be surprised if this has something to do with the announcement on July 13 that there are plans to stage at least parts of the planned first London concert as a "tribute show" (the hope is to get it ready by Jackson's 51st birthday in late August, but it might not be possible to get everything ready in time), so they don't want any other heavily choreographed "tribute shows" to compete against or air before it.

I'm pretty sure that it is still not in HD, but it looks great and is 16x9 so I don't think that you will be able to tell a difference between this and real HD.

I'm new to this HD stuff, so I assumed all current transitions on NBC would be HD. So it's SD then? Shouldn't I easily see the difference between this and HD?

If it is still SD, it is very good SD, and I could never tell the difference in fact it looks better than a good bit of HD. For all I know they could have switched to HD now, but the guide doesn't reflect that so I assume it is still SD.
Edit: From what I can tell from the AVSForum, it is still in SD.
