Despite the message displayed on the green screen regarding how long it will take, it can take many many hours to complete the task.

When you say "green screen" do you mean the MFS assert (or GSOD) screen? Or is it just a blank green screen?

As Scandia mentioned, it can take a while for TiVo to diagnose and fix data corruption or isolate bad sectors on your hard drive...several minutes to several hours depending on the severity of the problem and/or the size of your hard drive. But if the GSOD screen remains for four or five hours odds are that it can't recover. That usually means your hard drive will need to be replaced.

You could try some of the other Kickstarts to see if one might help.

Best of luck!

Another trick would be to put the drive in a PC and run the manufacturer diagnostics on it. Many of them will reallocate bad sectors on the drive. Some seem to do this silently (without telling you). Then put the drive back in the TiVo. The green screen will still come up. If you are lucky, it may complete and the TiVo will work again. However, this is a good sign that the hard drive is on its way out and you should back it up or replace the hard drive.

If you haven't, I would try KS58 first. If that doesn't help, run KS54 to see if it passes.

As mentioned you could run a third party diagnostic like WD's Lifeguard.

Try my post #4 and see if that helps. If so, you can then copy the drive to a new drive.

For drive removal instructions, you can refer to the drive upgrade FAQ at this URL:

http://tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sho...d.php?t=370784

The tools needed are Torx T-10 and T-15 drivers. Magnetic tips are preferred for these as some of the screws are in places that are difficult to get to with your fingers.

It's a torx screwdriver. Looks like a regular screwdriver but with a star on the end.
