"I Survived A Japanese Game Show" Season 2 *spoilers*
The season started off great. I don't think they did home visits last time but it was funny seeing the reactions of the selected contestants once they were told they had to go at once (i'm sure it was done for the cameras).
The Human Torpedo game would have been awesome to participate in. Spinning around that fast to be let go into those cans. Great stuff.
Kimberly, what a diva. Nails too good for manual labor....pffftt. Imagine being a kid in her elementary class and what crazy Parent - Teacher drama she gets herself into.
Thought Yari was a goner against Kimberly in the challenge to stay on but you can't count out heart.
They should have brought former constestant Meaghan Cooper back to interview the losers to up the eye candy factor of the show.

Yes, the eye candy factor this season is nonexistent. Very disappointing.

Kimber-ry had the nicest rack, but boy am I glad she's gone. What a bitch!
That Megan looks really weird. Like she could unhinge at any moment.

I was a bit disappointed in the first ep, but it could be I was working while watching and didn't give it my full attention. Last season, if I remember, they brougth everyone together, without them knowing what was happening to them, and told them they were going to Japan. Obviously, they couldn't do that this year. To me, the host of Majide makes this show, with his mangling of the English Language and the way he almost mocks the Americans on the show.

They've just shown the first episode on Wed.
I thought it was funny. I know it's stupid but this show makes me want to do the "Majide" hand gesture and wave my hands in the air "sayonara" everytime they do it on the show
I really didn't like Kimberly so I'm glad she's gone. She was so full of herself. She definately thought she was better than everybody else there. But if she had stayed, she would have been fun to root against.

Pre-empted?
I'm still showing Ep #2 in my to-do list but I read a newspaper article the other day that said ABC was going to give the pres another two hour block of coverage next wednesday. Any body else hear anything?

I'm watching and enjoying it so far but I don't see how this season can be as good as last season.
A big part of the enjoyment for me last season was that the contestants were basically being "pranked" about the show. They all thought that the show was a real Japanese Game show when in fact it was all staged for them. The "audience" was in on the joke, the "producers" and "assistants" were in on the joke, the "host" was in on the joke, the only people who weren't in on the joke were the contestants.
I supposed they could have picked people to be on that didn't see last year's show but judging from the premiere all of the contestants knew about the show.

I don't think the validity of Majide matters. It's still weird Japanese sh7t.

I've only watched the first 5 minutes or so but it appears all of these contestants realize it's a spoof. Is that correct?
What really made last year funny was that the contestants had no idea that this was a set-up ala Joe Schmo.

Man, some of the contestants are so obviously fake and over the top this season. The one that got the boot, the tall skinny blonde, and occasionally, the big fat dude. Either they're very bad actors, or they're extremely playing it up for the camera.
Oh yea, I "found" a copy to watch last night

It's available in "HD" on ABC.com too, no need to "find" anything.
The semi-HD stream actually looked acceptable full screen on a 22" monitor from the bed.

I don't think the enjoyment of watching last season had anything to do with whether the contestants thought the show was a real Japanese game show. Did that make them act any different? They still had to put on crazy outfits and participate in wacky games and get covered in sh7t every episode. Whether the show ultimately airs in Japan or not, or whether the contestants think it's going to, shouldn't matter at all.

I speak a tiny bit of Japanese, and I noticed something interesting in last night's episode. In the elimination challenge at the end, Judge Bob very clearly said in Japanese that Brent broke 25 (ni ju go) balloons, but the announcer said in english it was 20 balloons, and the graphics on screen said 20.
They didn't show Judge Bob saying CuteBlondGirl's score. I wonder if they were just messing with the numbers to make it appear closer than it really was.

I know that Majide is fake, but now I'm getting suspicious of the whole show. The interviews in between competitions are too slick, the people leaving too upbeat and there's an air of phoniness that leaves me feeling the whole show may be scripted. Is there a game show going on to "survive" at all, or are we watching people paid to act like they're playing?

I think the producers cast wannabe actors. The results are accurate, even if they adjust the numbers for tension. They may claim they send the contestants home immediately, but I would imagine the losers get to stick around for a free vacation after they are gone. So long as the producers keep out those with a competitive streak, they would get good after action interviews without having to deal with pissy whiners freaking out at losing the final prize.

THIS.
This is the norm for most of these reality shows. After all, it's a casting call and who knows about these? For the most part, it's actors who read Variety or wherever they advertise casting calls these days. Then they chose those who they think will be the "most entertaining", not necessarily who they think will be the best players. It DOES add some phoniness to these shows (it's one of the reasons I stopped whatching most new "reality shows"). REAL people don't get on them anymore. Survivor, Big Bro, if you notice, a good part of these folks are from LA...and those that "say" they live in Chicago, or some small town in Kansas, are actuallly in LA trying to be actors. Big Brother is the worst offender, but for that show, you need that type, or the show will be boring. Even AI, you're not REALLY getting amatuers, I'm sure most of them have tried getting recording contracts before.

Nothing new about this; most game shows get their contestants this way in the first year. (I am reminded of Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, where, near the end of the first season, they went to considerable pains (including running commercials during The Simpsons) to find replacements for the "fifth graders" for the second season, but there were no attempts to find new contestants until months later. Also, about 20 years ago, there was a syndicated game show called The Guinness Game, where contestants had to decide whether or not world record attempts would be successful; at the end of each episode, they gave an address to write to if you wanted to try to break a record on the show, but there was no way to ask to become a contestant.)

Supposedly, Wheel of Fortune has been doing this for years, if not decades. There is a preliminary "test", but it is secondary to the presentability factor.

Again, nothing new about this; most Jeopardy! contestants are from the LA area, but if you moved to LA from somewhere else, they say, "Originally from...".

A number of AI finalists successfully got recording contracts at one point; the only rule is, you cannot currently be under contract (because the primary purpose of the show, at least as far as Simon Cowell is concerned, is to sign talent to the show's associated record label).
So You Think You Can Dance? doesn't even pretend it's about amateurs; the credits make it quite clear that professionals are allowed, and that some of the contestants, judges, and choreographers may have worked together at one time or another (in fact, one year, the first contestant they showed assisted the choreographer in the previous year's finale).

I realize it's a while ago -- but was the "evil Doctor" an actor? What about Evel Dick?
