Smallville moving to Fridays next season

To make room for Vampire Diaries, Smallville will move to Fridays at 8.

http://www.tvguide.com/news/fall-tv-...s=breakingnews

Thursdays were allways crowded for me, but it looks like Fridays will get a TiVo workout now, with Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Southland, and now Smallville.

Good. I've been having to get Smallville via alternate means for several years due to tuner conflicts, but I won't have any conflicts on Fridays at 8.

My god, they aren't cancelling this yet? I'm fanboy of comics, but gave up on this show years ago.

It wasn't god awful this season. I even enjoyed it some.

The Friday move is good news. Thursdays will be a LITTLE more sane now.

Isn't Smallville the CW's highest rated show?

Update: I guess not. Its Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and then Supernatural.

This messes me up. Like DevdogAZ, I've been having to get Smallville via alternate means for several years because we started watching the shows only a few years ago -- we're still a few years behind. So I didn't mind that Smallville was probably going to be on up against Flash Forward and Bones next fall... but I'm pretty sure my wife and I are going to want to watch both Flash Forward and Bones as well as Vampire Diaries.

My theory is that's the episode that they had to rewrite in a hurry when they found out the show was coming back after all, and they didn't have time to figure out how to make it mesh with the 21 episodes they wrote when they thought it wasn't coming back.

This move should be ok for me unless SyFy plans on having interesting shows in competing time slots.

I have 4 tuners, so conflicts are rare.
But, I'll have to use the "alternate' source a day or two later now.
My CW affiliate is on a sub-channel and in SD.

From reading this thread and the one about the CW schedule announcement it seems everyone that watches CW has to use 'alternate means' to actually watch these shows in HD because their local affiliate is broadcasting in inferior quality. lol Thank goodness for 'ctu', 'dimension', etc online. lol

Doesn't really help me, because I'll probably be watching Vampire Diaries.

My name is Earl being gone helps, though, but Fringe moving to Thursday doesn't.

That would be among the least plausible of explanations, since Smallville was officially renewed in late February. (with prospects looking good since the fall)

This is not to completely shoot down the idea that the episode we saw was a last-minute rewrite - I think that's very likely - only that it wasn't a business decision that necessarily forced revisions.

More than a re-write though I think once edited, the episode ran long (I'm guessing it ran 5-7 minutes long, maybe even 10 minutes) and that's why we got such an uneven episode that contradicted parts of itself.

Even if they do, SyFy re-airs their shows again on the same night at a later time, so there shouldn't be any problem picking up a later recording.

Fringe is in a later timeslot, so it wouldn't have interfered with Smallville anyway. It's going against Supernatural.

If they didn't have the season written out by February, somebody was failing miserably at their job. But that would explain a lot itself, if they were working that tightly from script to film...

My guess, however, is that this script was indeed written to be a series finale, and that they did a crappy job of changing it into a season finale.

Most TV shows (in terms of when scripts are 'finished') are only about 3-4 weeks ahead of the airdate, especially at the end of the season.

After the script is turned in, there's one week for prep, 10 days to shoot (Smallville always shoots 10 days, according to producers) then about 7-10 days for post work (not including the overlap with shooting).

February? No, most people who work in entertainment are the type that cram for exams...

I don't think that's right. Top Model is usually their highest rated. Gossip Girl isn't that highly rated. For this current sweeps it has been:

Top Model
Smallville
Supernatural
One Tree Hill
Gossip Girl

I think they want/need Vampire Diaries to do well on Thursday since Smallville is likely to end next year as well as Supernatural. They may want to ensure that they have at least one show returning on Thursdays the next year. ABC launched Wednesdays with 3 new shows 2 years ago, and ABC is launching Wednesday with 5 new shows this year. The CW doesn't want to get into that cycle.

It will help with that time slot on Thursdays. I had as many as 5 SP's from 8:30-9 when Samantha Who and Parks & Rec moved to that slot. Not sure yet whether I'll keep watching P&R and no idea whether I'll watch Flash Forward, but that could still mean 4 shows.

Yeah, that's my thought as well. They've been promising us the "final season" for a while now.

I stopped watching (regularly) a few years back, because it just stopped being good.

If SciFi, oops SyFy, does re-air the show will it be full 16:9 HD or in letterbox?

I don't mind smallville moving since I have 2 DVRs. My concern is the show replacing smallville sounds aweful and could affect the ratings of supernatural. I would be devistated if supernatural got cancelled before they can finish the story arc.

That won't happen. For one thing, I doubt that anybody who's watching Supernatural now will stop because something else is airing before it. For another, it really can't hurt that a show aimed at young girls is airing before Supernatural, a show with a couple of hot, needy male leads...

For another, I doubt very, very seriously that any network would cancel a show in the middle of its fifth and final season. It's pretty common for networks to give up on shows quickly, not giving them a chance to build an audience, but they're also pretty slow to give up on shows that have been around for a long time. Which is why a lot of crap just keeps going, and going, and going...but in this case it will work to our advantage.

They (the producers) announced before Season 4 that Season 5 would be the wrap-up of the story they've been telling since the beginning.

They've waffled on the actual end of the series; they say it will be possible for somebody else to keep going after their story ends, but that they won't be doing it.

I'm thinking they wanted to have both Doomie and Clark die at the end, and have this be THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN story, done years ahead of time, and that DC put its foot down and said no.

Some suspect the same thing happened where Jimmy was concerned. He's not supposed to be the same age as Clark and Lois. To get things back on track, they kill this Jimmy off, at the funeral try to make out his MIDDLE name was James, and give a hint that his little brother will somehow become known as Jimmy Olsen.

Well this may cause problems for me. Can anyone point to an official source that can explain the fate of Dollhouse and T:SCC? If those get renewed I'll have too many programs for too few tuners. Normally my Friday is T:SCC & Friday Night Smackdown @ 8pm and Dollhouse & Smackdown! @ 9pm.
