Input switching

Please forgive me if this is common knowledge, I am a Tivo noob and just trying to help my parents (who own the tivo) out.

They have a Series 2 DT unit. The unit seems to work fine, no problems. My mom wants to be able to watch DVD's from her player but the TV only has a single coax input.

So, on the back of the TIVO, we have coax cable plugged in the RF input. Then coax out to the TV.

I have attached the DVD player to the Yellow/Red/White input. Will this output to the coax? Is there a way to switch between the two inputs?

Any help?

Thanks!

Can't do it that way (well you sort of can, but it's a pain to set up, tricky to use, and gives a suboptimal result). Go to Radio Shack and get an RF modulator. Plug the DVD & Tivo into the modulator, use it to switch in between the two.

Are there other non-coax inputs on the TV? Like composite (3 RCAs of video, Right and Left) or S-Video using also the Right and Left. I don't think many DVD players have coax outputs unless its a VHS-DVD combo. Then I don't think the DVD will output to the coax. It also has to be a really old TV to have only a coax input.

Thanks guys!

I will check out the radio shack idea.

It is a REALLY old tv... just the coax input, nothing else.

Thanks again!

Phillips sells a RF modulator into which you can plug (1) a coax input, presumably RF IN for tv signal and (2) your choice of S-Video or composite video cable plus audio cables. Output is a coax cable to your TV. If you plug your mother's DVD into the S-video or composite cable in and your Tivo into the coax cable in, then the TV will display the output of the DVD player when it is turned on. When the DVD player is turned off, then the signal to the TV will automatically switch to the Tivo's output.

I have purchased a couple of these at Target stores to connect multiple devices to old TVs with only one (coax) input.

Just put the TiVo into standby mode. It will continue to record but disable outputting thru the RF out port and allow what's ever plugged into the RF in to display on the TV.

Woah I misread your problem as this won't help you whoops. I've slapped myself so it all evens out.

You got a spare VCR around? LOL this will act as an RF modulator. Otherwise you gotta buy one (modulator not a VCR), and it's gotta have an RF in as well as composite (Yellow/Red/White) inputs. Or multiple composite inputs. Geeze your parents really like this TV? Maybe you should surprise them w/ a new one.
