what is model 288096
Hi,
have seen model 288096 dual tuner models shown on ebay for sale. Not sure if this is the same as the 649080 or if it is something different. If it is different, anyone know what the differences are. Can not seem to find any information anywhere on this #..

I've never heard of that model. Looking at Google results, I see some sites call it "TiVo compatible" and from "Dual Electronics". Avoid.

A current ebay listing has a BIN price of $500.
I'd avoid these like the plague. Even if they are legit, the sellers are clearly very uninformed and worth avoiding anyway.

Is this a safe buy or not? It has the same specs as a Tivo DT. I might consider bidding on these at such a cheap price if I knew they were legit.

Cheap price? How much is cheap? I had DT's coming out of my ears for a while, still have "spares" in case one goes down, what with all the rebate programs and free service gift cards from TigerDirect and other retailers last spring and summer... after rebates (and I got them all), the dual-tuners were FREE and a year of service was FREE. New standard dual-tuners were still showing up on ebay for $60 or less last time I looked (granted, a while ago). They should just keep getting cheaper with most people wanting HD.

It's interesting that the five I found when searching this model all show what appears to be the TiVo S2DT. I pulled mine out of the closet and examined it, and did not find that number sequence on it anywhere. That same site can be searched for TiVo, and get several hits for S1, S2, S2DT, etc.

I saw a 540 tagged with this number.
Is it just morons copying each other?

That's what I'm thinking.
I did see an ebay listing that stated that the 288096 number was the MPN - manufacturer product number

I would be extremely leery of buying anything tagged with this number. Having an incorrect manufacturer AND an incorrect model number would make me wonder if they even have the merchandise in the first place.

The one I saw was actually a TCD649080. I think this category was set up wrong on eBay, and people keep using it.

That makes sense - eBay has problems with another of it's prefab product descriptions for a TiVo, calling an HDVR2 an HD model with a 200+GB drive. I tried to get them to fix it, but the form response I received showed they were clueless.

E-Bay also uses the model 658000 in their description of the TiVo-HD, E-Bay's auto description bad.
